Hi, so here's my situation.

My school (NYU) has very limited spots for undergraduate TAs, especially the sciences. It appears that I will not be able to get a spot in time for applications. How important is having a TA position to dental school admissions? Talking to friends who are also predental in other schools makes it seem like being a TA is practically a requirement if you want to be considered at all. I have a 3.8 GPA and will be taking my DAT soon, so essentially, I guess my question is, given that I score well (hopefully) on the DAT, and have a decent number of volunteer and shadowing hours, and a research thesis coming up, will my chances be hurt given the fact that I was unable to TA during my undergrad?

That is the first I've heard of needing to be a TA for dental school. I think your friend is misinformed.

They never said explicitly that it's a requirement, but it's a huge plus if you happen to have a TA position on your resume before applications. Not sure how true that is.

Looks nice, sure. Requirement? No where near that.
