Does anyone have advice on how to cancel an audition rotation (Family Medicine) that has already been scheduled without burning any bridges?

I’m still interested in the program but want to do an audition at a different program that I currently rank as an equal. I have a very good understanding of the first program and have visited with the PD numerous times. I feel that if I cancel it could cause hard feelings and I don’t want to be blackballed in case I don’t like the second program. I wish I could do both but my schedule won’t allow it.

Dear Program director,
I am currently wanted on several outstanding warrants for my arrest so I will be taking to the mountains of Appalachia. You may contact me by short wave radio or through news bulletins. Please do not take my cancellation as a reflection of disinterest. After the trial (I should be acquitted), your program will be high on my list.

Thank you,
so and so

Seriously, just explain your 4 th year schedule was changed. That's it.

"Give me the f**kin' keys, ya f**kin' c**ksuker!"

Then hang up.

Something vague, a la, "I have reevaluated my 4th year schedule with my advisor and regretably find that I will be unable to fulfill my request for an A.I. Thank you for your consideration of my request and I hope that my scheduling conflicts have not created undue problems for you. " blah blah blah

I'm assuming of course, you aren't talking about cancelling something that is scheduled for next month - which sort of looks bad. BTW, in most cases, AIs do not significantly impact your application unless you are a weak, "on-paper" candidate and need the exposure to look better. So if your scheduled AI is next month, the program might not be remiss in being a tad miffed with you and it might be the better part of valor to stick with your schedule.
