Eh Nature is still a "bigger" IF. Its still the place to publish for a crap load of scientist.

TS, you want a big publication spewing US lab thats cutting edge? Check out the Mooney lab at Harvard. That place spits out papers like no other.

PNAS? More like Publications Not Accepted for Science.

On a more serious note, 19 pubs since 1998 isn't much at all and 50 or so lab members isn't an insane number for what looks like 3 PIs (and one other head PI, with half of the members undergrads).
 
China will soon overtake the USA in publishing the most papers per year in international scientific journals, which has significant implications for future patents and tech innovations.

But Harvard University by itself still publishes more scientific papers per year than the entire arab world combined

edit: checked my source again, and it actually said 17 islamic countries. But still.

lifetime CV of a PI != publications per year

Mooney lab != entirety of Harvard

To be fair, the only Islamic countries which have any real scientific output are Iran, Turkey, and MAYBE Pakistan and Egypt. Turkey is a secular country with an Islamic majority so I'm not sure it even counts, leaving only Iran. Iraq and Afghanistan are a war zone and Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, and Yemen are dirt poor. UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait are more tourist attractions than countries while Wahhabi Saudi Arabia barely even believes in science. I don't think I even need to mention the Islamic states in Africa.

I wouldn't be surprised if Harvard also produced more scientific publications than either all of Africa, all of southeast Asia, or even all of eastern Europe.

Totally tangental but I always that Jordan had something going for it compared to most of its neighbors.

Jordan is a more benevolent monarchy/dictatorship compared to its neighbors, which is why its protests weren't as violent and didn't last as long this spring. With a GDP of 34 billion it's still a pretty poor country. Almost comparable to Syria really.

EDIT: I should point out though, that it has the highest literacy rate in the Middle East. Unfortunately it doesn't really seem to have the money to fund any substantial research.

Probably because Jordan has better foreign relations with the US compared to most of its neighbors.

I couldn't believe it the first time I saw i too. Apparently there's a whole doctoral program for biology. It's insane what people do for a living these days.

Why do you say "to be fair?" Those are exactly the problems. And I would be surprised if Harvard alone topped southeast Asia or eastern Europe.

Never said anything else wasn't praise worthy. Hell some of the best stuff comes from "smaller" journals. Especially in special fields such as tissue engineering etc

BTW cool article. Journal of Physio has always pumped out cool stuff

Theres no attitude.
Unfortunately in the world of academia and graduate studies the journal does play a big role so there is attitude. Thats why people in big labs always try to publish in the big journals first. Is it right ? No. But its the attitude that exist at big research schools. If you are to blame anyone blame the tenure process and some of the career awards

There are plenty of labs as prestigious or much MUCH more prestigious. 19 papers is not that many for a PI

There are plenty of physician's that have 40+ papers just to reach professor status

Hm...I could have sworn someone said something about religious persecution. I wanted to point out that the real problem in most of those countries is money, more so than religious persecution or a lack of academics. The only religious persecution of scientists that takes place in the Middle East is probably that of evolutionary biologists.

Shouldn't publications per capita be the strongest indicator of research prowess?
 
I looked at the lab and it looks...okay. I have seen much more nicely designed labs with more equipment, computers and what not. So I would not really call it "wow", looks like a regular lab.

Prowess, yes. But I'm not claiming China is producing better or more productive researchers. I'm just saying China is about to pass our country in terms of overall publications, which has implications for overall number of new patents and tech innovations.

It begs the question then how many patents and new tech innovations have come out of each country with with respect to science and bio-medicine? Or all the other countries for that matter. It'd be really interesting to see since "academic" publications dont always lead to innovation. Might end up with a country with "less publication" than the US and China but more patents and innovations(maybe Germany?)
 
I'm actually more impressed with Solomon H. Snyder (he of the "Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience", the largest basic sciences department at JHU). I bet pants get tight when you see him in the halls. Anything less is only medium Robbins.

yeah that would be interesting. I don't have the answer to that; all I have is 15min of listening to an NPR show on the topic and an article I read about science vs. religion in the middle east
