Hello, I am a Texas resident who applied 2020-2021 application and was waitlisted at TCOM. I have just got a deferred admission offer for incoming fall of 2022, but have completed most of the applications for this cycle already. I was wondering what everyone's opinion is at this moment; should I take the admission and enjoy my year? or should I actually try again for more competitive schools with MD degree.

I know this is a great opportunity and would happily taken it if offered a bit earlier, but now that I have finished most of my application, I am being a little hesitant. I also do not know what I want to specialize and DO degree can hinder some specialties...

A little stats about me: ORM, cGPA 3.86 and sGPA 3.79. Took MCAT three times: 498(08/2018), 502(07/2019) and 507 (08/2019)
I have applied to only Texas schools last year and only received interview from TCOM (I made huge mistake in my application last year and only put 40 hours of community service with ~500 hours of healthcare. I fixed this issue for upcoming cycle for sure- 1000 hours of community service and ~4000 hours of healthcare services). I have ~250 hours of research. I received two new letter of recommendation and scored 50-75th percentile on CASPER this year. However, as I will be a reapplicant I am unsure how that will play on my app. I am about to submit my secondary in next 3-4 days.

I will be a completely new applicant for AMCAS and have applied to many schools here as well. My primary for AMCAS has not been processed at all.

Please give me some advice. As I know my stats are not the best, I do not know if I can get into other schools, but I can't also say I do not have a chance at all....

You have a guaranteed chance to become a doctor, why would you not take it?

Would you rather spend the year worrying about when/if you will be invited to interviews and if you will be accepted somewhere (not to mention spend a lot of money along the way) or spend the year knowing you are going to become a doctor at one of the *least expensive programs* in the US saving probably 100k+ along the way (congratulations! welcome to the class of 2026!)? I know what my answer would be, hands down, don't even need a second to think about it.

I might be a bit biased, but I say take the acceptance and run with it! I was in the same position as you this time last year. I had applied to all Texas school and 20 AMCAS schools and had interviewed at 3 TX schools but did not receive a single interview at any OOS schools and I had specifically selected OOS schools that had a high OOS acceptance rate and were well within my stats range - GPA 3.85 and 1x MCAT of 504. I was preparing to reapply, had already rewritten all of my essays, was scheduled to retake the MCAT and thus was in the middle of studying for that when I got the deferred acceptance at TCOM. I weighed my options but ultimately I chose to take the deferred A and have never looked back. You could always apply to do a dual degree DO/MS or DO/MPH at TCOM and work on your MS or MPH classes this year while you wait to start TCOM - that's what I did. I hear your concern about competitive specialties, but do realize that TCOM is one of the best DO schools in the nation and if you take a look at their recent match lists, you'll see that TCOM graduates have been very successful in securing some of the more competitive speciality residency program spots - ortho, derm, neuro surg, etc. TCOM is an amazing program. Do you want to decline this and risk never getting accepted to any other program or do you for sure want to be a doctor now?
