even for the MD/PHD premed is still okay to take the research in pass and fail option right? i mean there is no rule that the research has to be taken in letter grade, or does it look better with a letter grade? 😕

Why wouldn't you take it for a letter grade? They are almost always Easy A;'s

I would guess that the experience (along with a good recommendation from the PI and maybe some publications) would be better for the MD/PhD applicant than another grade on your transcript (as the person above stated: "They are almost always easy A's;" an A will probably look about the same as a Pass in a research lab.)

I heard AMCAS counts a certain number of Units for Research towards your BCMP each year, therefore, taking it Pass/Fail will benefit you GPA wise.

Do you have an option? At my school, you had to take it pass/fail because the department didn't think the course could really be graded.

I was wondering the same. It seems as if some people on SDN can actually have their research credit letter graded. I wish my university does this as well. It will certainly help with the GPA. Unless you broke some expensive machine or poured acid on your research supervisor, of course!

My research has been graded - and yes, it's an easy "A" (and a great GPA booster when your mentor allows you to pick out how many credits you want it to be worth).

yeah....i have 4.0 in sci gpa and my research mentor she is famous as a tough grader in biochemistry. its not going to be an easy A :scared:

Maybe, but my PI gave everyone in our lab who got credits for their research an A, and she isn't an easy grader for the regular classes she teaches.
