Hello everyone.

I am currently taking 4 classes, 1 as P/NP and the other 3 for a letter grade. I recently bombed my first calc midterm (haven't touched math in about 2 years) and with some calculations, I figure I may be able to pull off a C-/C if I do well on the rest of my exams (as in scoring high B's, which I'm not too confident about for the final which is said to be extremely difficult).

So my question is, should I change calc to a pass/no pass class (which means I will have 2 n/np classes in just 1 quarter) and retake it again later on for a letter grade or just stick to the letter grade option it's in currently and risk my GPA (which isn't exactly in the best place) lowering even further?

Which would be the best option in the eyes of admissions?

Thank you!

I think people would care less about the fact that you took two P/NP courses and more what those courses are. In other words, people might raise an eyebrow at taking a "pre-req" or "fundamental course" as P/NP. But as long as the rest of your academic record is strong, it may not be too big of a deal. It's hard to say.

I think you should do what is bolded above in the quote.

Does your school have the option of uncovering a p/np grade at the end of the semester if you end up doing better?

If so, I think you should go for it and aim for As on exams. Get a tutor and do more practice problems.

If not, then you might want to contact your premed adviser if you have one. It might look really bad to take a prereq pass/fail. I was advised against taking calculus III pass/fail. I ended up doing alright in it anyway. Make sure you talk to your professor to see what kind of grade you're really looking at. I was sometimes surprised at the end of the semester. I guess our exams were curved so much that I wasn't doing as bad as I thought.

If you are in the early years of undergrad, two P/F classes in one term won't raise many eyebrows if you have a strong academic record thereafter. But you won't do yourself any favors if you continue to use this strategy to preserve your GPA.
