So not getting in this cycle took its toll on me more than I would like to admit, and I would really love some time off from "being a pre-med" and just travel before I go back to school or go back to work to beef up my app.

I saved a lot of money from my last research job for traveling before med school (didn't get to use it because I didn't get in), and I want to go on some long backpacking trips through europe and the states instead of jumping back into school or research,

Stats 3.63c3.79s32MCAT lots of research and ECs are very good, but a lack of clinical hurt me A LOT. Taking time off wont help with my app at all, and might be looked down upon.

Any advice!? Would this show a "lack of commitment" or anything like that?

FYI, going to reapply 2013/14 cycle.

Here and in nontrad you're talking about school, research, Americorps. Where's the part where you talk about getting clinical exposure?

Until you have spent a boatload of time with providers & patients, seeing & hearing & smelling & comprehending, your ECs don't mean jack, and your personal statement is bunk.

In your shoes I'd get done w/travel & spend the whole rest of the year pushing stretchers. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, just get your fanny in a hospital and clock a few hundred hours. Pay attention. Do more than you're asked. Look for opportunities to shadow various physicians & get in the OR.

Nobody is going to care if you go travel. But at least try to learn about other healthcare systems while you're on the road.

Best of luck to you.

Travel now, regain your sanity. It may be the last time you get to do what you want. A few months off isn't going to matter in the long run and you will probably be happier for it.

I'm reapplying to Colorado this year after getting rejected last year. Lala, enjoy your time off, but make sure you come back to apply again. One thing I've learned from seven years in healthcare is that we need more people that really want to be doctors, people like you. Most of the people I see in this process are just clever people that aren't creative enough to come up with another idea of success. I may or may not get in this cycle, but I hope I meet you someday in school.

Your stat is good. I think you can afford sometime away. I have previously asked different schools' admissions about things you have asked. And the general consensus I have gotten is "an applicant need to show a continuous committement to medicine." But I am sure one or two months off to travel won't hurt. lol.
