I've been ridiculously out of order on the majority of my pre-reqs, so I had planned this summer to take the full sequence (9 credits) of gen chem . I'm nearing the end of the first Gen Chem, but as I'm looking at next session, I'm noticing I badly need to start taking my math sequence.

If I take the math I need, I'll have to take Gen Chem II in the fall along with Biochem to keep on track for the MCAT in April. Will it hurt to be taking them at the same? Or does Biochem mostly utilize Ochem (which I've had- don't ask why) and Gen Chem I?

Thank you.

I'm sure it varies by the school, but biochem seemed to use concepts mainly from organic chem (reaction mechanisms, sugars, amino acids/proteins). I think, though, we might have done a little bit with kinetics in biochem (which is general chem 2 material). I wouldn't worry about taking the two concurrently. I took ochem 2 and general chem 1 in the same semester.

You don't really need to remember much college chemistry to do well in biochem. The first chapter or week of your class will most likely be a review anyway. Biochemistry is more interrelated with organic, so you can expect to see some things like enantiomers, structural conformations, reactions, and mechanisms. All in all, biochem is mostly memorization. You'll be fine.
