For those that have already been through it, is it harder to do well on your boards if your school (NOVA) takes it after the first year or if they wait until the 2nd year (NYU). I want to be well prepared for the test and score as high as possible (obviously). Is it a bad idea to attend a school like NOVA knowing they make you take it that early? Should this be a large factor in choosing a school to attend?

Im assuming no one has ever taken their boards after 1st AND 2nd year.....That could explain the lack of response. But, ask the school you want to attend what's their pass rate, and maybe you can make a descision based off that.

i think it is pretty clear that when you take part 1 depends on your school's curriculum. if you are done with the subjects on the boards then taking it over the summer after D1 year is not early....why wait another year/half a year? youd have to relearn all the material. at my school, we are encouraged to take part 1 during winter break of D2 year b/c we have just finished all classes (except oral path which is not hard to do on your own) that are on the test.

I took boards after first year at Nova. Wasn't bad at all, Nova makes you take a lot of classes over the summer in addition to preparing for boards so be prepared to work hard - no real break. If you don't care to specialize, boards aren't that bad at all. Nova does prepare you to pass and do well, the first year studies all revolve around them trying to prepare you to pass Part I. It is nice now that I look back and have the boards out of the way!
