Hey, i was wondering if it's a bad idea to take science classes during the summer than during a regular school time. Tis applies to UC system only. Would the Admissions Committee look at them differently? I heard that taking science course during the summer is not as challenging as during the regular school time. is tis true? But then, the class goes by fast during the summer though, and that means u gotta study twice as much??

Nightingale, it makes no difference, I still got interviews to the UCs. It is generally a lot easier in the summer, which boosted my GPA up dramatically and made me a lot more competitive in terms of my GPA. I took the science courses at my university though, so I would recommend taking the bulk of your courses at your registered university. I took a bunch of dinky classes at community colleges just to fulfill the university requirements. I realllllly recommend doing hard science courses in the summer just to get it over with!!!!

I took both sessions for summer school offered at UCLA. THe first session I took 2 classes and the second session I took 1 class. I got A's in all of them. In all, all the times I have taken summer school to fulfill my major requirements, I got A's in them (5 A's is a big GPA booster) The workload is not bad at all. Summer school here is 6 weeks, so there is a test every 2 weeks, which is a lot of time to study for a class if you have nothing else to do. The advantage is that you can get rid of your really hard classes fast and still get a good grade

I took 3 summer classes at UCI- all bio- but I had to if I wanted to get out of there in only 4 and a quarter. As long as you keep it to a minimum i'm sure it'll be fine. I remember Western's website said somewhere they prefer if you take as few summer classes as possible (i'm sure most schools share the same sentiment).

As far as being easier, I don't really know about that. You still should have the same grading curve, and if you're in a 6-week session it's almost all the info of 10 weeks fit into 6 weeks which makes you work faster/harder in a shorter amount of time. My classes seemed easy to me but that's because I took some beginning biology classes after having taken a series of physical chemistry.

or you could take it with a **** load of other classes during the summer, thereby making your courseload very heavy and it will be seen as challenging. ANOTHER reaosn why they say summer isnt as chalelnging is b/c they assume most ppl take just 1 class as opposed to taking it with 3-8 other lcasses during the regular semester (therefore deemed as 'challenging'). for instance, i took 10 units last summer (biochem, english 1a, speech [speech wasn't a class at berkeley so it was a daily 50-mile-roundtrip commute]), worked at the pharmacy 10 hours/week, worked on all the pharm school essays/apps, tutored someone in ochem.

good luck!
