Hello all,

So, my O. Chem. grades stink. Cs, maybe a C- (can't access transcript online anymore, going to have to order one.) I was unmotivated, I didn't apply myself, and I figured I'd do something with microbiology (what my degree's in) so it wasn't a huge deal.

Anyhow, I've been considering Pharm. School as opposed to graduate school for microbiology (or something similar.) Some places require a 2.0 or better in all required pre-pharm. courses.

So my question is? How do I recover from this? My GPA is unimpressive, 3.0, but my GPA in my last year was better (not sure how much better, but I feel like I only got 3 Bs and the rest As, and they were all upper division science courses, and it was quarter system, not semester.) Not to turn this into a WAMC thread... so:

Can I re-take O. Chem. (though I did pass it at uni.) at a community college? Would that help with admissions? If so, how much? I'd probably have to take a communications course or two, and a human phys./anatomy course or two as well, so it wouldn't be a big deal, especially if my job contract gets renewed, since it's extremely flexible. Obviously, I'd want to do very well in all these courses (A- at least) and I figure it'd help (to get good grades), but I'm not sure how re-taking a course I've taken but have not failed works... and how admissions would view it.

Re-taking O. Chem. (and taking human anatomy courses for the first time) would help with the PCAT, since I know that if I wanted to get into pharmacy school, I'd have to rock the PCAT.

Thanks for any tidbits of info. you can give me. I'll do some more research on the issue, but I thought I'd post here first.

Depending on the actual school, you may not be able to. I wanted to do the same thing with calculus, but when I asked UCSF (for example), they said once you take it at a university, you cannot take it a CC. Because you graduated I'm not sure how that affects anything, but it's good to check with the school(s) you are applying to. By the way, some schools ask for C or better making a C- unacceptable.

I knew the possible C- might be unacceptable, but thanks for the response, I'll definitely make sure to ask the schools.

I retook some classes (Chemistry, Biology) because it had been 15 years since I had taken them and I needed to refresh my memory before taking upper level classes. I would rec. taking O. Chem again, it will show your dedication and better understanding of the subject. In my GPA on Pharmcas they just included all the classes, and for some schools they averaged the grades for each course together. I don't think a CC will keep you from taking them, they would like to have your money. I also audited some classes at a private university (they have this mainly for senior citizens, public universities usually charge you full price to audit), they only charged me $30. It is not on my transcript but I took every test and made an A and I could get a rec. from the prof. if I wanted to.

Good luck!

wow.. such as small world. im in the same position as you; 3.0 GPA, D in OChem and graduating end of this semester in Bio. I'm taking OChem at a CC next semester, as most schools want a min of C in all prereqs. PharmCAS avgs all grades; just make sure you rock OChem this time around 😀
best of luck
