my science gpa is kinda lacking right now and I was wondering if I take a couple of easy 100 level science courses (easy physic and biology courses) to boost my science GPA, will dental schools "look down upon it" or will they factor in your GPA in those classes with the prereq pre-dental classes at the same level?

If its Bio courses they wont, if its a bunch of Psych courses (which are not counted in the sGPA anyway but raise oGPA) then yes they might think your doing something fishy. Just dont over do it. Take your regular course load + 1 or 2 easy courses and that should be fine.

Just want to metione that an A- from an upper division science class will look a hundred times better than an A- from an intro level class. You can only take so many intro level science class.

I agree with wired and his plan.

This app process is entirely a numbers game sure they look at the courses but you are compared to other applicants by sheer numbers

Do whatever you gotta do to get your numbers where they need to be

You could also do some really easy lower level maths as well.

I also recommend you ask some of your classmates about some easy upper division science classes. At my school microbio was a walk in the park and it was a 300 level class.

You want to impress ds by taking courses that may not even qualify as pre reqs?

A small percentage of classes taken in college are actually DS prerequisite, i.e. O-Chen, bio, English, etc. any classes outside of that only serve to boost gpa or earn a degree. I think DS knows that applicants boost their gpa with lower level classes. The grades in upper level classes matter much more, but you need a good relative gpa just to et your name noticed on the app.

Look into Neurobiology classes. I got lucky and took neuro anatomy taught by a psychology professor... Easy A and a dental school said thats an elective they offer... Same class... Plus I took 2 other neuro classes which count as sGPA and they were easier. Also just ask around for easy upper levels like mentioned. Everyone at my school takes ecology (w/lab which looks better when you take lab classes) over summer because the teacher is a walk in the park. 90% got an A. Plus that class helps with the DAT.

Thats another pieces of advice, if you have not taken the DAT take classes that are on the DAT. like ecology, evolution, invertebrate BS. It will help with a few questions but only if they are easy. 👍

Would it be okay to take upper level biology course but something unrelated? like plant development? just to boost your GPA?

yeah thats fine. theres even a biochemistry for nurses/dietitians. Some anthropology courses count as biology too.

I think I had either 7 or 8 credits of Anthropology count as biology. One of them definitely had a lab component. Most probably the other one too. Had A's in both of them too, so that was a very nice surprise when my GPA got updated.

The easiest class I ever took in college was Herpetology (the study of reptiles not herpes...) and it was an upper level bio. The thing is I knew a hell of a lot about reptiles from keeping them as pets growing up. I would say it actually helped me because it's not a traditional pre-health course and I was asked about it at one of my interviews and was able to talk about some herpetology based research I did. Is there any field of science that you are extremely interested in and studied outside of class? Don't be afraid to take science classes that interest you, it can show a little about your personality. As long as you have an interest in the field and can clear up any questions interviewers may ask I think it certainly can help.
