Hi,
I've decided that I need to take biochem for the new MCAT but at my university ochem 2 (mechanisms, synthesis, etc.) is a PRE-req. Does anybody who has taken biochem 1 (carbohydrates, lipids, AA, nucleic acids, metabolism etc.) know how much ochem 2 I actually need? Can I get by just taking the two together?

No one in medical school will be able to help you with the New MCAT, but if you're wondering if you can take Orgo 2/Biochem 1 concurrently, that's probably a yes. The only organic reactions really stressed in biochemistry is nucleophilic substitution and organic oxidations. Make sure you have general biology (they teach you a lot about enzymes) /chemistry (lots of stuff that requires understanding what exactly a hydrogen bond is and isn't) /thermodynamics (should have seen this in chemistry) more than organic 2 because the bulk of orgo 2 for me was useless for biochem.

Depends on how much chemistry the biochem course includes. BTW, your quest for a good answer will be more fruitful in pre-allo and/or the non-trad forum.

Depends on your school. At my school we didn't learn a ton of chemistry or reactions in biochem 1, it was definitely more of a bio class and we focused a lot of pathways, receptors, cell membranes, and so forth. I could have done fine without ochem 2.

However, I have heard some students say thay had to memorize lots of chemical reactions in the class. That may be hard to grasp without ochem 2.
