Is it a good idea to take General Chemistry II and Organic Chemistry I in the same semester. I am also taking Molecular Biology as well. Let me know if this is suicide or not. Thanks for your time.

How about OChem II and Biochem I??😕😕

Lots of schools make OChem II a pre req for Biochem I. It sure does help, since carbonyl and nitrogen chemistry are generally OChem II material and Biochem I material. I mean, it's certainly doable, but if I had the choice, I'd do them in succession, rather than concurrently.

no problem. Sounds like a pretty cush semester, frankly. Just be ready for all those labs and don't procrastinate your lab reports.

As stated above, just stay ontop of it. I'm sure you'll do great!

Yea, i figured that. I was just trying to push my limits I guess lol.

Hi There!

Well, General Chemistry II is a heavily math based course. Ochem I is like learning a new language. I have tutored ochem for a few years, and I usually recommend to students that an easy schedule where you can really devote at least 25 hrs a week to mastering the course is a good idea. Ochem goes well with bio classes🙂
Take your time- it is better to go a bit slower and master the subject than overload with some possibility of having to retake. Ochem II and Biochem I are also good class to take together. Second semester of organic is a lot more familiar territory- you are learning reactions, how the electrons move in them and beginning synthesis. But you have already spent the time to learn the language of first semester.

My main point is to take your time and energy into ochem 1 and fill up your schedule when you have done well in it.

Thanks Emerald. I think I will just take OCHEM II this fall and then Biochem I in the Spring. I was really trying to avoid having to go to school in the Fall. I'm taking a couple hard classes this coming semester so I don't want to sacrifice my GPA too much.

No problem. Take your ochem, invest and find other classes to take with it that bring you joy. It will help to be more joyful about the organic chem. Sounds funny, but it works. And the plus of taking summer classes ( as I gather) is that you will be in "school- mode" in fall and will have less of a difficult transition to make. Maybe a little road trip or mini-vacation in August?

You be sooo relieved with organic I under your belt and have done well. I certainly was!!

Well I did average..I got a C in the first one, but I would love to get an A in the second. Well I'm referring to next fall because my school requires me to have both biochem I and II. I will be walking in May but will have that class to take in the fall to complete my degree.

Oh, I understand. I don't think there should be any barriers to getting an A in second semester. I have had a ton of students who worked their tails off in first semester and got Cs and then an A in second semester. Ochem II is more reactions and mechanism, the focus is different and lots more manageable. There shouldn't be issues with taking ochem II and biochem I in the same semester, they will most likely reinforce each other.

Yeah I personally thought Orgo II was more interesting than Orgo I. I loved benzene rings and carboxylic acid derivatives 😍

Keto-enol tautomerism sucked though👎

Well I hope I have the same feeling as you guys have about OCHemII. I thought OChem I was brutal, but maybe that's because I don't like chemistry.

That sounds like death to me, but thats because I despise chemistry with a passion. hahaa molecular bio isnt that bad. just like everyone is saying on here, just make sure you keep up on everything especially lab writeups! if you manage your time wisely (unlike me), you should do well. good luck with everything!
