So I've had my little guy for about 6 years now and since I lived at home throughout undergrad we've been together that entire time. I get the feeling my parents don't want to take care of him once I leave the house in a few months so I would like to take him with me, but I question how much time I will be able to spend with him. I will also be moving across the country so getting him there will be a pain as well. But what I do know is I would love to have him with me and it's better than only getting to see him a few times a year.

Has anyone here had good experiences with doing this? He's a small 12 lb dog so he's usually good with one walk a day, but leaving him home all day would suck. And I also worry that he might be a distraction when I'm trying to study.

Any thoughts about this? Bad idea?

Yeah. Manage your time well. At 6 he should be pretty settled.

Edited for tmi.

Dogs can be a positive thing, I guess it depends how demanding the dog is

I got a 4 m/o puppy during MS2. Definitely a bit demanding, but with a 6 y/o dog that should be more than fine. The only issue I can think of is the occasional day during MS1/MS2 and the majority of days during MS3 when you might be gone for 12+ hours a day. As long as you have someone available to help you - be it friends, roommates, SO, dog walker, etc. - I don't think you'll have any issues.

I got a 2 month old husky during my MS1 year...definitely manageable even with huskies being notorious for being highly energetic and mentally/physically demanding pups. You just have to manage your time wisely, but its worth it!

Brought 2 dogs, a wife, and a cat. Turned out fine. The only big negative about a dog/cat is that I had a little less time to socialize with my classmates after class and on weekends, since I felt bad crating the dog. If you have a social support or even good roommates who can help out in a pinch its not a big concern.

Worst case, it doesn't work out and you'll have to have your parents take over. Best case, keeping it around just might be what keeps you sane.

If you don't try bringing it, you'll never find out.
