Hey everyone, so I have had a decent amount of time to take a bunch of random classes not pertaining to my major (I am a nursing major planning to go MD route eventually). Some of them were for sheer interest, but a decent amount were obviously for GPA boosting. My question is, will taking a lot of random classes hurt me at all or look bad when I plan to apply?

If an interviewer feels that a class or 2 is random, he/she may bring it up. Just have a good reason why you took the class and you will be fine. An acceptable answer does NOT begin with "besides being a gpa booster........"

What kind of 'random' classes did you take, out of curiosity

This.

If you are a nursing major and took Drawing 101, 5 PE classes, and a ton of 100 level entry courses in all sorts of subjects then it may raise an eyebrow. As far as i'm concerned, all universities/colleges have general requirements that must be completed in an attempt to create "well rounded" students, so almost all students will have a handful of humanities, history, pe, social science, etc courses even if they are an engineering or science major. But I guess it depends on how many easy/random classes you are talking about and what they are.

I was asked why I took Piano and so many Asian history classes. I just basically said I wanted to be more knowledgable about things, so I took classes in subjects I'd never learned about before (rather than taking American history again like everyone else). The interviewers seemed to like the answer.

I took a class a Sci-Fi class in undergrad. Sadly was never asked about it.

I took a wide range of classes though. Undergrad is a time to broaden your knowledge and explore different interests. As the above said, interviewers like that kind of response. 🙂
