Hi I was wondering if it's possible at all to study for STEP 1 while on rotations during 3rd year and do well. Has anyone done this before?

y not just take it before if you went to school in america according to stats and messages on this board you basically came out of the womb with a 99 waiting for you.

well...i have been stuyding for about 3 weeks and I have another 2 weeks to go but unfortunately my progress has been very slow. I really feel like I won't be ready 2 weeks from now. So I was thinking of taking the exam couple of weeks into my first rotation but I really don't know if that is feasible at all (my school does not require me to have USMLE step 1 done before starting rotations). Any advice would be really appreciated

I took step 1 about 4 days ago. I started studying for it 6 weeks ago at the beginning of geriatrics and finished studying during my surgery rotation. The exam went well I think, but we'll see.

How many hours a day did you have on average during your rotation to study for step1? was your rotation pretty chilled? did you find it easy or difficult studying for step 1 while doing rotations?

It seems counterproductive to me.

2 weeks is a lot of time if you use it effectively.

If you can't use this time effectively, how are you going to balance a clinical rotation, preparing for your shelf exam, AND Step I?

I doubt you will ever be better-prepared for this test than after these current 5 weeks of dedicated studying.

Definitely wouldn't recommend it. You simply don't realize the lack of free time you will have on your rotations. Being in the hospital all day burns you out. When you get home, you open up a book and you promptly fall asleep.

Just go at it hardcore during the next two weeks. If you try to study basic science stuff during your rotations you will hemorrhage more knowledge than you learn.

If 2 weeks is truly not enough time, then see if there is any way you can get out of your scheduled rotation. Claim a family emergency or something.
