is that a really bad idea?

The way I'm scheduled i'll have time after IM to study and take the exams but it'll be before ob/gyn and peds, which will be scheduled towards the end of 2010 so I probably wouldn't get any scores before Nov or Dec. I'm hoping to match in 2011

I plan on doing the kaplan books and videos on my own and the other books out there.

should I take it around may 2010 or after i complete peds and ob/gyn

This question has been asked before. I think the consensus is that, while not impossible, it is going to be much easier to teach yourself what you need to know for the CS without having taken those rotations than it might be to self learn OBGYN and Peds for the CK. So take the CS early, but strongly consider finishing at least one of those rotations before the CK.

If you're get good evaluations in 3rd year, I would recommend just going for it and teaching yourself the ropes for Step 2 CS. If you're not, you should wait and get more practice. Definitely take step 2 CK after your rotations.
