Is it frowned upon by dental schools to take a pre-req the summer before of matriculation? There is a certain class credit I have is messing me up so I was wondering if any wise SDNers had input. The schools do have a certain date to have all your pre-reqs completed by, but can it hurt my application if they see I'll be taking it as a summer course? Just to clarify I haven't taken my DAT yet so no interview as of now (don't want to make you guys think I already got to the next level and what not).

Schools dont care, you just need to have the class completed for the first day of classes and the dental schools need the transcript showing that you completed the class before classes start. Some may even say before orientation, it shouldnt be a problem at all though.

Awesome!

The thing is that my school combines the 2 semesters of orgo into 1 semester and most of the schools don't take that credit to fulfill their requirement. So if I get accepted to one of those schools I would need to take orgo II as a summer class the summer of matriculation. Hopefully if it overlaps the school can make an exceptions since I think this is a rare case.

Call the schools and see. Every school will have a different policy on that kind of courses.

I called all 13 a while ago and only like 6 or 7 take that one semester credit. I figured if i should be lucky enough to get an interview I'd bring it up again and see what they say. But as far as completing it before matriculation, all the other school's admissions secretary said it has to be done before orientation or class. But since the person on the other end of the line is not in charge of handling this situation for dental schools I figure someone higher up on the totem pole will give me a more solid sounding answer.

Thats about the answerr I would expect. Looks like youre gonna have to take orgo 2 at another university.

That's the plan if I go to a dental school that doesn't take my 1 semester orgo. I just hope that if the class at the other university runs into orientation they might make some sort of exception for me in this case. If you are accepted and just can't get that one class out of the way before matriculation can dental schools just put you on the accepted list for the following year if they don't make the exception? I'm sure there have been situations where an accepted student couldn't attend the first year due to some small circumstance. Anyone know of that situation where a dental school would offer acceptance the following year to an accepted student who couldn't finish a requirement or whatever?

As far as I know, my dental schools dont offer deferred matriculation. They do for the medical schools though.

Besides, you have plenty of time to finish orgo 2
