Can I conceivably take the DAT without having taken the 2nd semester of organic? I'm a junior and thinking about taking organic 2 in the summer, but I should take the DAT before the end of the summer, right? Do I even need organic 2 to get into dental school?

Organic 2 is required to get into dental school. Its not obligatory for the DAT but it WILL help. Its best to get the DAT done by July at the latest (I took mine just before the july 4th holiday)

I had all of my pre-reqs except for a full year of organic which I am currently taking now. I knew that in order to have a chance of attending dental school in 2005, I would have to take the DAT by the end of October. To make a long story short, I was able to basically take what I knew in Organic and learn what was most tested on the DAT. I ended up getting a 17 on that section. Basically, after a full semester of organic under your belt, you should be fine with some studying. Good luck!

I only took the first half. /i spent a total of 6 hours studying the 2nd half material. I got a 21 on that section. Maybe I lucked out because my test just didn't have much material from the 2nd half of ochem. My predent advisor said the DAT was doable without the 2nd half, and I'd have to agree.

I only had OC I. I used Kaplan and the textbook from the OC I to study the other parts. I scored 25. I have to thank my tough OC prof. IMO, if you study OC I well, you'll have enough knowledge/background to study OC II on your own.

I would try to take the DAT before the end of the summer. If you wait till then(I.E. early august) and do poorly, you will have to wait 90 days to retake. This involves an entire new round of studying plus your undergrad will be starting up, and depending how your other stats are, you may be going to interviews for dental school as well. So, if youre going to take it at the end of the summer, you should be "planning" on a one-timer.

Nope. Not all schools require ochem2. And for the OP, I only took ochem1 and I did fairly well on the ochem section on the DAT. It was my 2nd lowest score (19) but it's not bad at all, since o-chem is my weak point. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I wasn't sure if I should take the second semester or not since the school I really want to go to doesn't recquire it. Do you think it would increase my chance of admission?

I think almost every school requires Orgo2. I think not taking it is a bad idea. Almost every other student you are competing with will have taken Orgo2.
