do you know the specific program that prowler matched into? He could have matched into the best general surgery residency in the country and wants to do a fellowship, how do you know? Judging by your posts you sound like the ultimate tool; have fun in derm.

Enough said. Also, even if the program isn't "malignant" (as far as general surgery programs go), I wouldn't expect surgeons to be worried about how they are perceived by patients, so I guess I should have predicted Prowler's apathy toward the idea of being a positive, visible role model.

Once people started getting out of control, I just rebutted. Go back and look through the posts in the thread. I did not resort to personal attacks nearly as quickly as anyone else.

It's irrelevant who has "thrown more," because it is only natural that I had to "throw more" while still being the most reasonable person. When others threw first, I responded. If you want to run numbers, look at the number of posts targeted at each person. I was the target of the most posts, and I generally received more attack posts than I dished out when considering all of the involved members.

Look man, do whatever you want. While my original post-- and subsequent responses to your posts-- might seem over the top, just keep in mind that I feel a bit strongly about the issue because of what my professors keep hammering home at my school. You'd be hard pressed to find one doc out here who sees tanning as a smart choice, but a tan would probably have a small effect on how your application is viewed. If you're going to go with the tan, just try to avoid the beach bum look and don't use cheerleader vocabulary (i.e. "like, like, like, um, like"-- it has a synergistic effect with the tan). The fear of skin cancer in combo with people sitting in offices all day has lead to plummeting vitamin D levels in the general population. As time goes on VitD is looking more and more important. In 10 years I dont think it would be unreasonable to expect it might be pretty common practice to suggest that someone lays out in the sun 10 minutes a day or something.

In 10 years I dont think it would be unreasonable to expect it might be pretty common practice to suggest that someone lays out in the sun 10 minutes a day or something.

Finally, an intelligent post about the original discussion point. I agree that VitD is appearing more important as we learn more about it. I think the healthy answer, though, is D3 supplementation rather than sun exposure. I can't think of a good reason-- other than unexplained psychological well-being that might be related to pain-induced endorphin release-- to spend purposeful time soaking up rays. I certainly don't avoid going outside, and I almost never put sunscreen on. However, when I'm outside, I normally keep my clothes on and I do use sunscreen when I'll be in direct sunlight for more than an hour or so.

I don't know much about it, but I think direct sun exposure generates something like hundreds of times more usable vitD than you can get from natural food. I have no idea compared to VitD supplements though. I think the current recommended daily value for VitD is orders of magnitude lower than what a lot of researchers are thinking we should be getting.

That's not to say its justified to lay out in sun for hours, I think I remember reading that after about 15 minutes of direct sun to a bathing suit-clad body you will make all the VitD your body can process for a day.
