Does anyone know if you can write off vet school expenses on your taxes? I have spent thousands of dollars so far with applications, transcripts, GRE scores, and flights. A little tax break would be nice!

OMG that would be awesome, but I don't think that it can be applied as a deductible. I hope I'm wrong.

Hadn't thought about that but that WOULD be awesome. Applying this year has cost me over $3,000 so far (application fees, supp fees, travel, etc) and only increasing more and more with every interview. It's getting ridiculous. Will likely end up having to take out loans just to pay for the travel.

I have an amazing CPA, so I don't know the details, but I know she insists I hand over all reciepts for school supplies and equipment (steth, opth), uniforms, text books, etc. I don't know about travel, application fees, or any of that. I think she is also trying to figure out how to juggle my home office (I operate a business as well.)

Wow! How do you find the time?

I am a pretty experienced dog trainer/animal trainer. I had a great business in NYC, and restarted in in Charlotte when we moved to NC, but didn't do it as big. I only do inhome special cases that are through personal referrals (in Raleigh area now). I also charged decent $ for what I do, and insist on a certain level of owner buy-in before I will start. So my case load is small (2-4 cases a month, with no more than 2 sessions per week per case, but generally only 1 session/week) and focused on very specific, long term issues; particularly seperation anxiety, resource guarding, anxiety issues (which may include minor levels of fear aggression), and working dog issues. I don't deal with other types of aggression, I don't deal with inter or intra species conflict in the home, and I don't deal with issues involving children. I know that sounds kind of snotty and hyper selective, but I train because I love training, I enjoy the extra money, and I need to only be involved in cases where I am comfortable and not overly stressed while I am in vet school. I also work with a couple of vets who may provide meds and such (and act as referrals.) I also do not mention being in vet school because I don't know what the implications of that would be.

So, really, it is my hobby and part of the school/life balance! 😀 I just profit off it a bit (plus I already had all my protocols and equipment, so there wasn't initial loss of time or money to set up, and to not use it means I am not getting a return on the investment.)

😳 like a lot of trainers, I am not a fan of CM. thanks, though, for thinking it is impressive. it is fun and pretty rewarding...and it kind of keeps those 'client communication' skills sharp!

Really? Why don't they like him?
Haha, I totally hijacked my own thread!

Thanks Pandacinny. I am not opposed to the occasional use of aversives as part of a comprehensive training program. I have a couple of tests on whether I find a technique effective: is it easily replicable and managable by the person responsible fore the animal?, would I accept the same treatment of myself to learn a difficult task?, is the technique effective at telling the animal what to do? (because the list of things that I don't want the animal doing is huge, and the list of what I want them to do is relatively short.)

For me, any trainer who brags about how many bites he or she gets is focused on the wrong thing; I see every bite I have gotten (3 in the past decade, one completly accidental; tooth scrape, 1 because I hurt the dog and the dog air snapped with pup teeth, one because I put the dog in teh wrong situation) as a shortcoming on my part. I watch his video with teh sound off and watch the animals, and it doesn't work for me and my belief system. I also think his show, in general, does damage to the process of learning and training BECAUSE it lends itself to the idea that there are quick fixes (even if he is saying it isnt' that fast) that can work in a few hours. He also doesn't have any solid background; he gets by on charisma and machismo, whie ignoring science and health.

Of course, all of the above is my opinion, and YMMV.

Ah, good to know! I don't watch much tv so I never really had an opinion of his methods but it looks like there are much more safer & effective methods out there. Thanks for sharing!

TT, look at you with your fancy shmancy mobile thread linking! Those are pure SDN skills right there folks! 😛
