All of the following statements are FALSE except:

A. pneumococcus translation takes place in the mitochondria
B. pneumococcus does not contain organelles.
C. pneuomococcus cells are larger in diameter than most eukaryotic cells
D. the pneuomococcus nucleus is a double membrane-bound structure

answer: B

So...we are looking for the statement that is true. the explanation says that the bacterium does contain organelles. shouldn't B be false and therefore eliminated? is this an error?

B is a true statement because bacteria DO NOT contain (membrane bound) organelles. These type of questions are tricky.

It's B.

Bacteria has no organelles.

Pneumo has a strain that causes strep. It's smaller than a eukaryotic cell. They don't have a nucleus, so that option is just there to throw you off.

Just did this question as well and I'm fairly annoyed particularly with their answer.

"Remember that ribosomes are considered to be organelles. They are just not membrane-bound organelles...The bacterium does contain organelles."

So B is FALSE? I feel like they meant to add some additional qualifiers to the stem but didn't.

These questions are always the most difficult for me! When it asks either which is false or which is the only one that is not false, I found a strategy that has been working... I write T or F next to each answer choice and then which ever is the odd one is usually the correct answer. I double check after to make sure, but its been working so far!

Just did this question. I'm pretty sure this is an error. If not, I would appreciate any input. Here is the full question again:

85. All of the following statements are FALSE except:
A. pneumococcus translation takes place in the mitochondria
B. pneumococcus does not contain organelles.
C. pneumococcus cells are larger in diameter than most eukaryotic cells.
D. the pneumococcus nucleus is a double membrane-bound structure.

**OK so they are basically asking which statement is true (which is none of these answers)**

Answer explanation:
85. B is correct. Remember that ribosomes are considered to be organelles. They are just not membrane-bound organelles. The bacterium certainly requires the presence of ribosomes to carry out the translation of mRNA to make protein. The bacterium does contain organelles. The correct choice is B.

**This answer explanation directly contradicts the answer. This has to be an error. If it isn't can someone please explain it to me, I feel like I'm missing something otherwise.

BTW, this is Berkeley Review Biology chapter 9 passage 13 question 85, page 353 of the second book

Yeah this is just a horrible question. If B is the right answer it should have stated "pneumococcus does not contain any membrane bound organelles".

I think the main purpose is to understand and distinguish that you are working with a prokaryotic cell and not a eukaryotic cell.

hm... a question going forth....

does the definition of an organelle ever specify whether they have to be membrane bound or not???

hm... a question going forth....

In general when they use the word organelle they are usually referring to a complex membrane bound structure. Even though the ribosome is technically an organelle, when people use the word organelle they are not referring to ribosomes.

This happens to be a poorly written question IMHO.
