“A thin, reactive plate is added to the surface of the steel hull to prevent the iron in steel from rusting away. Because ions conducts electricity, the galvanizing plate can be placed anywhere on the hull, as long as it’s in direct contact with the iron and not submerged in the water



Why does the sacrificial metal have to be outside the water?
