I was wondering for all of you applying to TCOM, the 2 essays that they want--do you simply answer the question or kinda make it into an interesting story like your primary PS. Also, they want a letter from a DO. I've never shadowed a DO, but I became interested in it because my family physician is a DO, so should I get him to do the letter. He doesn't know me THAT well, but he does know that I plan on going to med school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As I remember the secondary essay isn't a very formal thing, its just a chance for you to comment on some feelings you might have about osteopathic medicine, specifically. At least, I think that's what most people did on that. I'm not sure how they have set those essays up this year. About the letter from a DO, that is an optional thing as I recall. I didn't have one, and it didn't seem to hurt me, but I'm sure it would be helpful to have a letter from your family doctor D.O. It would be especially helpful if that physician is a TCOM alum. What is the question for the essay?

1)Explain the concept of osteopathic medicine as you understand it.
2)What experiences, and/or relationships have motivated you toward a career in osteopathic medicine.

Yeah...so you just need to comment on those. If you think about it a bit, anyone in their right mind should be able to think of something that motivates you toward the osteopathic philosophy. The things you'll likely want to emphasize are continuity of care, looking for the root causative factors v. just treating the illness, preventive medicine, etc.... Do a little research into D.O. ideas, and these should be easy essays. I don't think they're looking for much beyond an understanding of what separates osteopathic from allo. Of course, just be honest about these questions. How you respond will come up in the interview process.

WOW! you already have secondaries. I guess I am really behind 😱

Yes I think you should ask your family physician if you could shadow him or her for awhile. Then you could ask him or her to write a LOR for you. My family physician is also a DO so I arranged to shadow him for awhile. He then wrote me an awesome LOR and even let me see it. 👍
