TDMSAS Conversion: UT Austin v. TAMU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do UT Austin students get screwed over by their +/- system or does it even out in the end (A- = 4.0 and B+ = 3.0). Of course, no one can know for certain without actual grades, but what is the general consensus.

It seems like TAMU students have the advantage of coming from a non-plus/minus school. How big of a difference would the conversion and +/- system play in the end for one's GPA?

EDIT: Also, why did UT Austin switch to a +/- system?

For TMDSAS the grades get converted to flat ABCDF. If I'm not mistaken schools cant even see if you input a +/- before it got converted.

To combat grade inflation is always the story, even if that doesn't end up happening.

I'm glad A&M doesn't do this, even if I made the wrong side of the A/B borderline more often than right.

TMDSAS standardizes all of the grades to 4,3,2.... so it won't make a difference.

I think +/- also give professors more options for grading and they can better differentiate student abilities. A 90 is usually hugely different from a 97 average, it's a little disingenuous to give both the same grade. That being said I did attend a +/- school and several times ended up with 93 A-'s which are incredibly annoying.

Im so glad I got out just before the +/- system went into effect.

All my profs claimed it was due to the fact that the elite schools around the nation use +/- ... so naturally Texas had to adopt the system.

lol yeah i only had 1 semester of +/- at UT

i dont think +/- is the way to make things more competitive to change the top 10% rule
