Hello, has anyone here had any experience teaching for Kaplan? Or know somebody who has? I'm just curious because I will have a year between graduating and starting dental school. Has anyone taught while in school? What is the time commitment/score requirements? And how much do they pay? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

i taught a DAT course this past fall for kaplan, and i'm currently teaching an MCAT course. you need a 90th percentile or above in the test you are teaching. there is a 4-5 week training period, then you are on your own to teach classes. pay is 20/hr for class time and 7/hr for out of class preparing of lessons, which you do on your own time and is self reported.

its a pretty good deal. the time commitment is whatever you want it to be. they give you a schedule of available classes and you pick which one(s) you want to teach, and that's that. you can do as much or as little as you want. i'm teaching in addition to my full-time job, and i've been doing it for about 6 months now and its starting to get old. after my MCAT class ends in March, I won't be taking on any more classes because i want to enjoy at least SOME of my year off between college and dschool 🙂

Pay varies from center to center. I get $15/$7.

In the north you are likely to get more. They may also start you off at a lower amount and then increase that after your first class.

I really enjoy it.

Wondered about that $20/hr, I was like damn! Columbus OH Kaplan was $15/hr for first class, $18/hr after that.

When I first started with Kaplan, it was anywhere from $16-18/hr where I live (FL) and it depended on experience.

But after the economy went down, they decreased it to $15-?/hr. They tell us we are not supposed to share the exact amount we get. So we never know if our colleague gets more or less than we do.

my only gripe about kaplan is that they force you to teach exactly their way. you're not even allowed to teach your students some acronym you've found helpful. i know some strats that have helped me tremendously and it annoys me i can't share with the students i'm trying to help succeed. when i bring it up, they just tell me to submit my advice to their materials-writing center.

other than that it's ok

Wooow that is weird.
In my teacher training, they told us that if we had acronyms or other useful stuff, to teach them for sure and help them by including those things in our lessons.

Yeah they only said that we couldn't bring in our own study sheets or typed up questions and study guides.

I used my own acronyms and ways to remember things constantly to enhance the material, but Kaplan's techniques are good. I made fun of several of Kaplan's acronyms, and I think that actually made them easier to remember, like all the animal ones...

This is exactly why I left during training. You have a big binder and every page has how long you should spend on it and everything is pretty much scripted out. Its obviously because they want you to follow a plan that ensures you have covered everything but its a real turn off to teach like that.
