Hey!-
I NEED a new phone and I was debating whether or not to get an iphone for medical school.. First off, I heard it was really useful for rotations etc.? I am entering fall 2010.
Any current medical students have it and find it extremely helpful? (is the camera in it good too?)

Georgetown REQUIRES it http://som.georgetown.edu/76736.html#1 and other schools require a pda… The medical school applications are supposed to be really helpful for anatomy lab and clinical. There is a medical Spanish app!…

Secondly, it is pricy- can you get away with a 16 GB or should you get the 32GB? I really don’t think I will put a lot of music in it.. I could also get a normal phone and then just get the itouch- but both the 32G iphone and itouch cost $299!

Thanks so much for any advice/opinions!!

I just got on recently...I wasn't too happy with my coverage and needed a new carrier. I previously had a centro (my first smartphone) and knew I needed a tech upgrade. Per my buddies in their 3rd/4th years, a PDA is in their minds a must. I simply need it because I use it to manage my schedule/activities/communications...at this junction your options are probably either an iPhone or blackberry if you decide on the way of a smartphone. There was a thread not to long ago about this if you're interested.

I got the 16gb 3gs...honestly, right now I don't really use any apps, nor did I think I would. I think there was some sort of study done a whiles ago that ~70% of apps downloaded weren't used by owners past 1 week. I like the iPhone primarily because it's like having a small handheld computer in your pocket. I send/recieve emails, look over powerpoints, notes, multimedia, etc., fairly easily. I recommend giving both a BlackBerry and iPhone a try before you purchase however, once you have both in your hands, it'll be pretty clear which one you'd be happier with.

Unless your school REQUIRES it from the beginning you really don't need one during the first 2 years, and I'd say wait until you get into rotations to decide what you want. For you that's still at least a couple years away and there will be many new phones/PDA's out, not too mention 1 or 2 newer models of iphone.

Any of you guys excited about the new Apple Tablet. Supposedly its a 10inch Iphone. I think this would be great for notes, email, and ebooks in medical school.

10 inch iphone? its more easily called the first protable computer without a keyboard.

to the op.... ipod touch.. 😀

unless required, I wouldn't get a PDA phone for the first 2 years (unless you want one). I didn't need one and there aren't many academic uses for it during that time-frame.

M3-M4, you might think about one, but there are plenty of options. I'd hold off a few years and get whatever's new when you're about to hit the wards. I do like the iPhone, but I hate AT&T's service. An iTouch would be a great PDA for the wards and would handle most of the functionality you'd need in the hospital. Most hospitals have wifi anyway.

ohhh... Thanx so much guys!!

I guess I cannot justify getting it by saying its necessary for school! -Ill just go play with the phone and buy the cheaper one if i HAVE to have it 😀

You almost certainly won't need it for medical school, but if you decide you want a smartphone than I'd highly recommend the iPhone. The 8GB at $99 is a steal. Just two years ago it was $500. Also, the plans are about the same price as for other smartphones (~80-100/month for reasonable minutes, unlimited internet, lots of text messages).

As I'm sure you know it's got a bazillion uses too. Mine connects to my freakin car.. wirelessly. My phone will be in my pocket and when I start the car it starts my last playlist through the speakers. Way awesome. It's my navigation system, whether I'm walking through an unfamiliar city (today in NYC) or driving an unfamiliar route (two days ago). It's officially my guitar tuner for crying out loud. Other smartphones have similar features, but the iPhone does almost all of them better imo. Plus it's just plain fun to use! I think you have to have it. 😀

You don't NEED an iphone for anything. Shoddy coverage and a mediocre phone at best imo. Get an android phone.

hey Music MD how do you get it to connect to your car? is that an app?

OP, I would recommend an iPod touch as was stated previously.

It is common for hospitals/campuses to carry wireless and there is no monthly fee, contract, or worry that you'll be stuck with a particular carrier for the phone service.

It should get the job done if you have a choice.

Good luck!
