I've just been accepted to pharmacy college and will start this fall. My school recommends that we work 10-15 hrs during school. I'm currently a certified tech but just volunteering at a military hospital. I'd like to look for a paying job now at a retail chain, so do I apply as a tech or an intern?

if you have your intern license or will get it soon, you should apply as an intern. you can always work as a tech , depending on what you work out with your hiring person, but applying as an intern distinguishes your name in the pile, since anybody and their brother can apply to be a tech, but only pharm students can apply to be interns, there should be fewer apps.

then when you get your interview, discuss this matter with the hiring person, offer to be flexible, and work where they need help . tech and intern hours are scheduled differently a lot of places.

I don't have my intern license, but at my interview, we were told that we need to get it both for Nebraska and the state where we are living, since I'm in the distance pathway program. I'll go ahead and start this process, then apply as an intern.

I don't recall where your home state is, but some places (i.e., Missouri) will not let you get your intern license until you have finished your first year of school. Your Nebraska license will only help you if you're working in Nebraska (but it's still required so your rotation hours can be reported).

Thanks! My home state is currently NC. A friend of mine asked her hiring manager if she had to wait a yr, and she wasn't sure. I looked on NCBOP about getting an intern license, but it only mentions "internship" hours. An intern is a paying job for current students, different from experience hours, right?.

This is what it says:
PHARMACY INTERN

The Board registers persons who are acquiring pharmacy experience toward licensure as interns. All practical pharmacy experience intended to satisfy licensing requirements must be validated through registration in the Board’s internship program. A pharmacy intern working under a pharmacist preceptor or supervising pharmacist may, while under supervision, perform all acts constituting the practice of pharmacy. Pharmacy school students do not have to register as technicians while earning internship credit.
