When someone says they have X years of research experience, what exactly does that mean? I'm asking because this will be my 4th summer doing research, with very little during the school year. So have I done 4 years of research? Or would 4 summers be equivalent to 1 year? Also keep in mind that during the summer I often work 50-70 hr/wk, but during the school year people generally work no more than 10-15 hr/wk.

4 years implies 48 months.

4 summers = count the months or weeks done.

4 years implies 48 months.

I second this. You should specify that you did 4 summers of research working X hours/week. The adcom will get the picture that you were devoted to research if you were in fact working 50-70 hours a week. Don't overstate things, it will only come around to hurt you in the end.
