Ok so i found someone to help me collect teeth. now i need to know...i have to give the dentist a jar with a liquid inside of it?? im guessing that the liquid is formaldehyde, but where can i get it from?? Thanks =)

My D-school recommends common household bleach diluted 1:10 with tap water.

so, how many teeth do you guys need? apparently i need to collect about 300 for usc... is this a normal number?

Approx. 100 for us, but more = better selection.

What i cant understand is how you would go about getting any anterior teeth in great shape. Who pulls out good teeth? Im also collecting but havent seen what i have so far, but im guessing almost all will be rotten. I wonder if this even matters...

are we only supposed to collect adult teeth, or are children's teeth okay for these practice procedures as well?

Chlorhexidine (clear or light colored) is a great storage solution for teeth; also, the screw-top bottles used for prescription drugs are excellent containers for the teeth in the liquid as they tend to have good seals and and protect the materials inside from a sun a little bit.

the lady said that

Store the teeth in 10% buffered formalin and make sure the teeth are not placed in the autoclave.

what is beffered formalin and where can i get it from?

I thought it would be hard to find teeth cause I called a bunch of oral surgeons and they all have someone they promised the teeth to already.

THe other day, I saw an Oral surgeon sign when I got lost trying to find apartments to rent for school. I thought what the heck? it can't hurt to ask one more. It turned out the surgeon has been saving teeth for students all the time but no one asked cause he works alone and not in some fancy group. To top it off, he also separated the teeth into two jars, one with molars and premolars and the other with incisors/anteriors.

go figure! I called and called and when I thought it was hopeless I get two full jars of teeth in 10 m inutes!

The molar jar is way more full than the anteriors but there are lots of teeth in both. There are some pretty nasty ones but I was surprise to see lots of really healthy ones as well (mostly molars).

But yea.. the water look nasty and I made the mistake of opening the bottles to change the solution but the smell was incredible so I shut them tight and promptly put them under the sink in the bathroom. I won't be bothering with them until school starts... whew!

So yea.. don't open that jar if you can help it.

I'm totally grateful to that surgeon. It was the easiest thing ever.. SO yea.. am done collecting teeth.

Pristine anterior teeth are often extracted as a result of perio disease. Teeth don't go to pot simply from caries only.

haha..im not even sure if my school requires to collect teeth..im guessing since ive heard nothing..then i dont need them

Well, the first letter from my D-school's administration recommended the bleach solution or any other preservation liquid. I just received another letter (this time from my D-school's chapter of the ASDA) telling me to disregard the first letter and avoid using bleach as it damages the roots.

They now say to use formalin. So, I just finished running around town swapping out containers with the oral surgeons who have been collecting for me. My current undergrad biology dept. was very helpful and provided me with as much 10% formalin as I wanted.
