I am drawn to understanding child development. I do not think I want to do psychiatry for a number of reasons so the path to child psychiatry is less appealing than the path to developmental peds. I know this is a relatively new field but it seems that the demand is high and that parents "get" the idea of seeing a pediatrician that specializes in developmental peds when their child has developmental delays… many of the parenting forums discuss wait times of over a year to get an appointment. I'm wondering why this field is not as popular given how it seems to allow for flexibility, a cash based practice (if desired), and has overlap with child psych (which is getting increasingly popular). What are the downsides? Lifestyle? etc.
Even if you are not in developmental pediatrics, I'd like to hear if you have referred your patients to these providers and their experiences.
