I received an invitation to PCSOM. Can anyone tell me about the school and its programs. I would like to know how the school compares to others. Interview 2/22😛

Congrats on the interview, this means you are 90% in, you just have to convence them you want to go there.
I'm pretty familar with the school being I will be attending Pikeville this fall, lived there 21 years of my life, and my father graduated from PCSOM. As a school goes, it's a great atmosphere and has a wonderful facility. The school really emphasizes, being primary care docs, in underserved areas (preference giving to ones who want to work in Appalachia). This is the main thing to getting into PCSOM, they actually rejected higher MCATs and GPAs because they are looking for docs who believe in the area and staying there. They also have some pretty good rotation sites. Plus, for 25,000 per year they pay for everything (laptop, books, opp table, boards, review course for boards, and a handful of other things).
As interviews goes, I know they are going to interview 120 people for 75 spots. Right now they have accepted 20 and interviewed 30. So, I wish you all the best...if you have anymore questions feel free to ask away, I'll be glad to answer.

thanks for the reply hossofodac. I would like to attend PCSOM. It seems they are the only school that has shown interest so far. I've been placed on the wait list at the other prospective schools. My interview isn't until next month, however if you find any more info. that could potentially be of help for the interview please don't hesitate to drop a thread. Thanks again, hopefully i'll see you in August😀

Hey JMJ - Congrats on your interview! I was accepted to pcsom in december. I've got only 2 pieces of advice for you -- 1) be ready for a small town and 2) be ready for an ethical question during the interview. A girl from my school is also interviewing there in February. They are all so nice down there, it is very relaxed. Good luck!

thanks for the info. Good luck in the fall!😎

The Step I first time board pass rate since 2009 has been close to 70% yep that means that 30% of the class failed.
When I started in my class we had 86 students and now we are going to graduate with less than 60.
The step two pass rate last year was 48%
Yep that means for Step II 52% of the Class failed in 2010.

This is not surprising, given that their students are on average substandard. However, what I am surprised about, is that they haven't been put on academic probation for such low pass rates.

{ Mega Bump I know}

seranade man you really love to bash on schools with sub standerd stats ha? and you so easily believe a poster who comes onto the forumns with 2 posts, bumps a thread thats almost ten years old and bashes a school.

you really have to stop bashing schools that accept lower stats. just because they do so doesnt mean the students are "sub par" lighten up.

and to the "med student" from northern kentucky. please stop bashing pcsom and trying to get a rise from people. unless you post some concrete evidence then no one is going to believe such nonsense

Fair enough, however what I'm saying is statistically it's not unusually that people with a 3.3/23 are going to have difficulty passing the boards. But still, in theory if what he says is true, then don't you think they should be put on some probation?
But anyways, I'll lighten up.

You don't know. I truly believe that the admissions comittee knows best and I don't think they would accept an applicant they felt would have difficulty passing the board exams and becoming a liscensed physician. There is just too much for the school to lose, their investing just as much into you as a student as you are investing your tuition dollars into the school. Plus PCSOM isnt a young school either. there are plent of people that would love to go there. There are so many different backgrounds for applicants to each school.
On the other side of the spectrum there are also students with 3.8's and 30+ on the mcat at MD schools who also fail the boards. Just as many? No, but they do exist as well.

As to whether something should be done? Absolutely, if this is in fact true, something should be done. But the chances that this is any way true is I would say less than 10 percent. and thats bieng generous.

Thanks for lightening up though.
