"tell me about yourself" question

when an interviewer says "tell me about yourself," what is he expecting? i'm sure they don't want a list of things. do i just pick one or two personality traits and elaborate on them? anyone have any suggestions? 😕

I did this online interview thing at http://www.monster.com and they suggested to ask the interviewer what exactly it is that they want you to tell them.
