Temple ACMS 2014 cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently interviewed for their medical school, but will possibly be applying to this program if I am rejected. I love Temple and love that they offer the post-bac students the opportunity to matriculate into their med school!

Congrats on getting an interview, hopefully you did well!
Thank you! I think my interviews went well, but my GPA and MCAT are on opposite ends of the spectrum (3.97 and 27), so I honestly have no clue what my decision will be. The senior admissions counselor, Dashaun, told me I wouldn't be there if they didn't think I were capable of succeeding there, so that's good. She is so friendly and extremely nice--use her as a resource! She also helped me decide when/if to apply to the post-bac when I was at Temple for my interview, and was very helpful earlier when I was emailing her about it before I'd even received my II.

I got an amazing vibe from the school, and plan on applying for the ACMS post-bac if I end up being waitlisted or rejected. Really want to be a Temple Owl!

Omg, that is an amazing GPA lol--if you don't get in I feel like you would just have to retake the MCAT and you would have a really good chance of getting in? But ACMS is supposed to be really good and always nice to strengthen your résumé... Thanks for the recommendation because there are so many different kinds of ppl at admissions offices. Nice to know there's such a helpful person at Temple!

Did you visit the campus? What do you think it was that really made you love the school? I haven't visited so just wondering. 🙂

Yeah I just need a higher MCAT I think. I'll strengthen other areas of my application, too, for good measure. On the interview, we did a tour of the medical school, so just one building really, but it was very nice! The lecture halls are big and spacious with the most comfortable chairs ever for students to sit in. The anatomy lab is very nice and doesn't reek of formaldehyde, too! The library is huge, and there's a food court in the building as well. The building is occupied mostly by med students, dental students, and post-bac students. The students on my tour guide were very nice and genuine (huge plus), and the other kids who were interviewing with me were very nice and friendly as well. Overall, I just got a very good vibe from the school and had no problem imagining myself there for the next 4 years. 🙂

Has anyone here heard anything back after submitting their application?

How competative is this program and what are they looking for in their applicants besides $$$? I took the mcat 3 years ago and got a 32 so would I need to retake it because it expires?

Also, is it to my advantage to apply really early or is feb okay?

From what I understand the program is pretty competitive, the average GPA last year was about a 3.5 and the average MCAT score from last year was a 29.8 (for those applicants who submitted scores. Note the MCAT is not required for admissions) .. You can apply with your old MCAT score, but you would need to retake it during the program in order to matriculate into the Medical School in the following fall.. I believe their website says they will accept 2012, 2013, and 2014 MCAT scores for matriculation.

After reading the thread from last year I think they look for people who are really service oriented and have a lot of volunteer/missionary experience. Also I think they favor underrepresented minorities. It is actually one of the cheapest post bac programs available and it is one of the only ones with automatic acceptance into medical school. They accept about 40 students a year into the ACMS program, if all 40 get 3.5s and 30s then all 40 get into their medical school. Its really not a money making program, those kinds of program only give the top 10% an interview or something like that. The ACMS program is really one of a kind.

They don't even start reviewing applicants until the end of April (at least that is when they have started in previous years) so I think you will be fine applying in February, but as with any application there is always an advantage to applying early because they review applications in the order they are received.

Good luck with your app!

Has anyone here heard anything back after submitting their application?

I highly doubt anyone will hear anything about an interview until at least April. Last year no one really heard about rejections until July.

I've been researching this program for three years now, it is always good to have a back up plan lol

I just got an email saying interview invitations begin in December. Wtf?

I think this email mostly pertains to the BCMS applicants. They start interviewing in February so it would make sense that they would send out invitations in December. If you go to this site http://www.temple.edu/medicine/ppp/prospective_students/important_dates.htm it says that ACMS won't hold its first interviews until May. Judging from other years I doubt they will send invitations out for ACMS until March or April because they like to get the BCMS class filled first and then they move to ACMS.

You're absolutely right! Hey would you happen to know if we receive a graduate certificate after completing this program? I know it's a non-degree program, but I just want to know if GRAD PLUS loans will cover the out-of-pocket expense? I emailed the program director a couple days ago and she has not returned my email. :-/

Hey guys, I am applying for the post-bac program because I'm simply concerned that my GPA (3.24 without grade replacement, 3.5 with) doesn't align with my MCAT (39). I had a few difficult years when I was younger but grew up and focused but, unfortunately, that doesn't undo the fact that I f***ed up in my early years. Anyway, I have a rather dumb question...hopefully. I saw that the post-bac instructions asked that essays be no longer than 800 characters, but I'm not sure if this includes spaces and/or if it's a hard maximum. I don't know if anyone can answer this, but my question is....if I refer to the program as "post-bac" rather than "post-baccalaureate," do you think that would be looked down upon? I'm struggling to keep some of these essays below 800 characters and surprisingly, those few "saves" would be all I need. Any input would be great. Thanks!

Yes if anyone can chime in on the 800 character limit as to whether it includes or excludes spaces, that would be awesome

All I can say is that I forgot they had a limit and successfully submitted my app with essays that were definitely over 800 characters.

I recall reading somewhere that it does include spaces but the app will let you go beyond 800 (so the requirement isn't very strict).

I've also applied to the acms program. I hope others post here who have and will post updates as we get them. Hopefully?

It's clear that interviews don't happen until May, but I can't stand the wait, I really want this program!! Does anyone know if any preference is given to PA residents?

applied last month. in previous threads they talk about interviews in late april but I don't know how they're doing this year with the delayed BCMS apps. good luck all!

It's definitely a good idea to get your app in as soon as possible. The ACMS program has already sent out interview invites for April.

Bruno, do you know of anyone who received an interview invite for ACMS for April? Are you certain that it's not for the BCMS Program? Because the website clearly states that ACMS interviews start in May, and for the last two years, emails for May interviews went out end of April.

I believe the previous threads for ACMS said emails in late April for the first round of May interviews. But they do continue to interview through July, it seems.

I got an ACMS interview invite for the second week in April. Some others have too, they just posted to this thread:

I just noticed no one had posted anything here and thought I should mention it.

hey guys i was complete for acms on march 10th. any idea how long it could take to hear back being complete on that date?

Hmm interesting, I have similar stats and was complete early January. Did you get a complete email?

Also, may I ask anyone who's awaiting word on the AMCAS program: have you been out of undergrad for any time and if so, doing what? And, do you think that may make a difference in who gets interviews? Just to share: I haven't taken the MCAT and my GPA is 3.2/3.6, and have been in a post bac fellowship for two years. Thanks!

Could you link us to the other thread(s)? Thanks!
Good luck everyone

I interviewed April 9th for the ACMS. There were a few BCMS folks too since their servers had been down. They said we would hear back via email and snail mail - early the following week, but I still haven't heard anything.

JRaae, if it makes you feel better at all I also interviewed April 9th and still haven't heard anything

It was nice. I thought they made it as low stress as possible. Faculty interviews were in the morning and student interviews were at the end of the day. In between, Grace Hershman told us more about the program and we went around the room introducing ourselves. After that there was a tour of the medical school building with current med students and lunch.

Thanks for the reply!

FYI: just got off the phone with the temple office and I was told that it could be up to another 2 months before I hear anything about an interview. It's been 8 weeks since I submitted my application, and 6 weeks since I was notified of completion. At least I haven't been rejected yet, but this is nerve wracking!

Thanks for letting us know! Been wondering when the next round of interviews will be sent out. Since they had interviews in April, did they mention when the next round will take place? Thanks @sierrafw !

No, unfortunately they didn't provide any specifics! It's just a big waiting game at this point.
