It my understanding that their general reputation is quite good (I guess being in philly they do have to compete for the spotlight with UPenn though). Its the area of the city that its in that has the really bad reputation though. For clinical, they do seem to be reswarch focused, but the one student I knew from there (she was internsing at a large VA where I did a practicum) certainly knew her stuff. I also know she got to do both a clinical and research practicum in the Department of Neurology at UPenn's School of Medicine.

Temple's reputation is very strong. I echo the comment about its location in Philly being dangerous, but the program itself is excellent.

Concerns regarding the prestige of a program is an important factor but it should not ultimately decide where you apply to. That is, you should consider whether the program is a good fit with your given research interests and training goals.

Many would argue the clinical program at Temple is considered a very competitive and ranks at the top in Tier 1 Clinical Ph.D. programs. Yes, the faculty at Temple includes Phil Kendall, Rick Heimberg, Lauren Alloy, Deb Drabick and other leading researchers in the field. Bottom line, do not select programs based on prestige bec. if you are not a great fit to that specific program your chances of receiving an interview yet alone an offer is diminished.

FYI. Philadelphia being dangerous is overblown. It is like any metropolitan/urban city, you must exercise good judgement. Boston had the highest murder rates this past year and Harvard is located there and yet no one mentions that Harvard or BU is a dangerous place to go to graduate school.

Well, to be fair, Harvard is on Cambridge, and the immediate area around it is much much different than the urban areas of Boston proper.

I'm actually headed off to Temple in the fall, as I found the program to be an excellent fit with my research interests and they offer great clinical training to boot. I would agree with the above comments that it's a research-focused school. Also, it has the most diverse undergrad population in the country (or so they claimed at the interview), which makes the psych 101 pool excellent for collecting quick data from a racially/ethnically diverse sample. All-in-all, if you think you fit well with the mentors there, definitely apply because it seems like a wonderful program!

In terms of how safe the neighborhood is, it definitely borders on some areas that aren't so nice, but around the school itself is relatively safe for any city. As long as you're not wandering around the adjacent neighborhoods at 1 AM, I didn't feel like it would be unsafe at all.

The only thing that hinders Temple's reputation in the public eye is its location. It's annoying because (let's be real) it's a way for suburban people to implicitly say, "there's a lot of black people around there..."

But yes with regards to your question, the clinical program is quite prestigious and it does have a great reputation. It's program consistently ranks in/around the top ten http://www.socialpsychology.org/clinrank.htm
Dr. Heimberg is clearly the top researcher in the world on social anxiety disorder. Dr. Alloy and Kendall are also of course huge names in the field.

Basically I wouldn't spend your time worrying if the program is prestigious enough for you but rather, if you can get in. 😉

I would argue that Temple's reputation (in terms of location) is not because "there's a lot of black people around there..." but because there's a lot of violent crime around there. I love Philadelphia, but there is simply no denying that North Philadelphia is a dangerous area.

Academically, Temple's clinical psychology program is rock solid.

I feel that the portrayal of Temple University's location is very exaggerated and leads to unjustified gross generalizations about the whole area. The distinction between Temple and UPenn, Drexel and LaSalle in terms of safety is essentially arbitrary, there's better and worse areas surrounding all of these campuses.

I just feel that race plays a definite role and is a very real undercurrent that colors peoples perceptions of Temple. I really think that the diverse undergraduate population as well as the high level of African-Americans in the community affects people. Parents come back to the suburbs after taking a tour of the campus and uneasily suggest alternatives to their children, and tell their neighbors about their experience which perpetuates the notion that it is a terrible area. The area really isn't anything to write home about. You simply need a head on your shoulders as you would in any major city.

But at least we can agree that the clinical program is really impressive!

I don't disagree that Temple is more strongly associated with the black community than the other Philadelphia universities, or that all of the universities that you mentioned border sketchy-to-dangerous areas. Nor is my intent to dissuade applicants from applying to or attending these top notch programs.

Regardless of the fact that some people's impressions may be based solely on the racial composition of the student body and/or surrounding area, North Philadelphia and West Philadelphia have earned their reputations. By any standard, they rank among the most dangerous and crime-infested neighborhoods in the United States.

There's absolutely no denying that last point. It just seems that Temple takes the bulk of the heat on this issue when other Philadelphia universities don't even make it into the discussion, for whatever reason.
