Hi everyone! I have been fortunate enough to have been accepted into the following programs with scholarships. For context, I am interested in returning to Florida for residency. In terms of specialties, I am interested in radiology, anesthesia, and surgery. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

University of Vermont - LCOM
Pros
  • True P/F with zero internal rankings for pre-clinical years (rotations can be honored)
  • Smaller class size
  • Supportive and responsive administration
  • Higher ranked in USWNR and PD rankings
  • Really got along with the older medical students and my overnight host

Cons
  • Less scholarship funding (180k as opposed to full-tuition) - however, I may still be able to negotiate
  • Primary care focus (not of high importance for me given my specialty interests - radiology, anesthesia, or surgery)
  • I felt more at home in Philadelphia than in Burlington
  • Connecticut campus hospitals lack many residency programs and seem more community-like than academic (difficulty establishing connections for residency?)

Temple - LKSOM:
Pros
  • Location (I loved the city when I visited) and have some friends in the area
  • Diverse patient population and pathology
  • Has a residency for almost every specialty (including those I am interested in)
  • I got along more with the prospective students during Second Look Day
  • More funds (full-tuition scholarship)

Cons
  • Although pre-clinical years are P/F, you are internally ranked
  • North Philadelphia isn't the safest area
  • Administration admitted to sometimes being disorganized
  • Lower ranked in USWNR and PD ranking

Are you sure Temple internally ranks? I remember them saying P/F preclinical (but you know your percentages on every exam) and H/HP/P/F clinical on second look day, but I could be misremembering...

Are you on WL for any Florida schools? I'm assuming you are a FL resident now and applied broadly in FL.

Yes, I am waitlisted at FAU. However, I prefer these two out-of-state options because they will be cheaper with the scholarships. Additionally, the schools seem more established, having their own hospitals and many residency programs.

I talked to a current medical student that told me he believes they rank students in three quartiles during pre-clinical years. This helps with determining AOA nominations, but nobody truly knows. The culture among students did not seem competitive at all despite this. It may not matter much.

Thank you to all who responded! I will be committing to Temple 🙂
