Hello Temple students (or Brian 🙂). I wanted to ask this question about whether you think Temple is gay friendly. I know that Philadelphia is an awesomely diverse city but my impression during my interview is that the dental science campus is more conservative than the rest of Temple.

I'm just a friendly normal guy from the east coast that happens to be gay and totally "out". I'm not an "activist" and I like to make friends with all types of people. One of my good friends happens to be Mormon.

p.s. I am very active on SDN-dental forums but got this free login name from bugmenot.com

I certainly cannot speak for Temple but, unfortunately, dentistry seems to be very conservative in general. I doubt it is any different at Temple. I know many of my LGBT friends in dental schools around the country just have to keep quiet about it while at school.

Yeah, San Francisco is a liberal town so I thought my school would be too, but it is pretty conservative. We have a fair number of teachers/admin that are gay, but apparently there is only 1 student in the whole school (about 450 DDS students, plus I don't know how many IDS (international) students) that is openly gay.

Or maybe dental school is like Iran 😀

I'm really surprised about these responses because I thought San Francisco was more accommodating. I've had one interview in SF and I'm expecting one more from the other SF school. I'd think being out would be no big deal. It's 2007!!! What's the big deal if you are gay or straight?!! Being a skillful and ethical dentist (or dental student) should be what matters.

In contrast to SF, I've found that Tufts has an active GLBT club. They encourage applicants to get in touch with other club members and ask questions. They even said they could arrange a meeting with another club member for a personal tour and a place to stay for an interview or visit. Pretty cool if you ask me!

go to SF, I would say the atmosphere is more comfortable for GLBT. I wouldn't go to Tufts. My friend at Tufts does not think so (well, I'm just saying base on what he told me from his experience there)

I was a little surprised too, but I don't think we're about to start handing out lashings for riding in cars with men. The nature of dentistry (small business, lots of money floating around) seems like it would attract a fair amount of red staters to me.

Plus I know there's at least more than one person at school who's out. You can't beat SF if you're looking for GLBT friendly.

edit: It appears the OP has been banned.

yeah I noticed that too, but it's still an interesting discussion.

And you know more than 1 person that openly acknowledges that they are gay? The couple of GLBT people I've talked to about it said pretty much everyone is laying low (except for afore mentioned 1), since it's just easier that way at school.
Well good, I hope it's true. It shouldn't even be an issue.

I think NYU is gay friendly, we have at least 2 gay people I know of in my class of 240.

I believe there is a well respected professor here too who is gay, but I'm not sure. He does research on lesbian, gays, etc. in dental school.

As far as I know, the only person in our class who is potentially gay has not made it openly known whether or not they are. There are definitely some professors and staffers at the school who don't hide their homosexuality, but that's a little different. I don't think the majority of students at our school would treat each other differently if they knew who was and wasn't gay, but there are probably some.

After school, I definitely think it becomes more open. I know many openly gay dentists in the area where I went to undergrad.

Thanks for all the advice. All of the schools mentioned above are ones to which I have applied and/or interviewed. My hope is to get an acceptance in a metropolitan area. hurry up Dec 1st......... 😛

I don't know if Philly is gay friendly, but apparently SDN isn't, because the OP was banned. From looking at his recent posts, I didn't find a controversial post.

He came out on his last post and was banned. Interestingly enough.

Maybe this last part got him banned - what does it even mean?
