*Planning to specialize*

School 1: Temple (IS)

Pros:
  • In state tuition (70k/yr)
  • Strong clinical reputation
  • The dentist I shadowed is a somewhat recent Temple grad, seen first hand the quality of dentist the program produces
Cons:
  • Far from home, no easy way to get there (closest airport would be over an hour drive and driving straight to temple would be around 6 hours)
  • Location - north philly scares me. I know most students live away from the school and commute in but still a dangerous area
  • Travel cost and cost of living would probably offset the lower tuition cost
  • May get stuck taking a class I don't need this semester because David said we cant drop classes during my visit. I'm not sure how strictly this is enforced but I only signed up for the course because it was a required pre req at other schools that I am no longer considering. I dont know if I can get out of this but I don't wanna take any risks with having my acceptance re-evaluated.
School 2: Case Western (OOS)

Pros:
  • Close to home, just over an hour to get there.
  • Brand new facilities, beautiful building
  • I think they're pretty good for specializing? Not sure of this
  • Rather strong reputation in my hometown where I plan to practice at.
  • Nicer area to live, more familiar with the city.
Cons:
  • Sketchy reputation, especially clinically from what I've read on here and reddit (not sure how much truth this holds, please enlighten me)
  • More expensive tuition (86k/yr) but again cheaper travel and cost of living will likely offset the difference a bit.
  • Heard that students only chose case because it was the only school they got in to.
Summary: ultimately I was waitlisted from my top school so for now im trying to narrow down where to put a deposit at but I still want to make sure im making the right decision in the event i dont get off the waitlist. Leaning slightly towards case but I've been back and forth ever since decisions came out. Not 100% sure which is better for specializing or how much it should impact my decision.

I’m a resident at Case. The DMD education doesn’t seem like anything special. Most students complain about it non-stop, but that’s pretty typical for most dental schools.

If cost is about the same, being close to family could be nice.

Go where it costs you less and where you will have tons of patients. Your first goal is to be the best general dentist you can be with the most confidence in your technical skills with the lowest level of debt possible. (It costs money to go to residency.)

Do the math about travel impact on your COA to Temple. Hope the PA Turnpike (and OH Turnpike) rates don't skyrocket.

Ask your supervising doctor about Temple's specializing. There should be evidence in alumni magazines featuring past students and residents making bank.

What is this "extra class" you want to drop? I'm sure that Temple would prefer the trade-off of an enrollment deposit for a dropped class you don't need for them (but if it might help you overall in dental school...???). Does Case require this course?

Thank you for all the valuable insight. I guess I jumped the gun on this a bit because I was actually just accepted off the waitlist to my top school!
