Hey guys, I was just wondering what you guys thought about the Temple PM&R. They are taking 9 people this year, and was wondering how it compared to the other PM&R programs in Philadelphia as well as VCU.

Thanks!

I rotated there. Fantastic program, awesome residents, approachable PD, exposure to everything, HUGE network of grads (*many of whom are now PDs or Chairs of other departments). TUH is not in a good part of town. Moss however, is a beautiful facility in a nice suburban area. Funny that you mention VCU in the same post - for me VCU was the "Temple of the South". I really liked both of these programs.

I think Temple and Jeff are pretty much on par with each other with some minor differences. Can't speak to UPenn as I didn't rotate or apply there (did not want a categorical program).

Just a note, Penn now has 2 advanced positions in the match, in addition to the 4 categorical positions. With the planned opening of their new rehab hospital in July 2008, they've also expanded their residency program by 2 positions.

Don't know anything about Temple as I didn't interview there.

Awesome! I really liked Temple and VCU both.. I saw alot of the same qualities in both programs, and thats why I was asking for a comparison. I was not able to rotate through either (due to time), but just wanted to see what others thought about these two programs. Did you rank Temple high on your list? I ranked it VCU 2nd and Temple 3rd. Just curious!

Thanks for your input!! 🙂

I rotated at Moss Rehab Hospital (the free standing hospital Temple residents rotate at) in the Brain Injury Center for 4 weeks. I was very impressed with the variety of pathology and quality of the residents. Interestingly, almost all of the major brain injury cases in the Philly area are sent to Moss and there were many instances that patients were sent from Hospital of University of Pennsylvania (UPenn's major acute medical center) to Moss. The attendings, therapists, and ancillary staff were also very proficient. Moss has a model system for TBI, meaning better funding than some of their other departments.

I didn't rotate or apply to VCU, but one of the Temple residents went to MCV/VCU for med school and had glowing marks for their rehab program and recommended it very highly. It seems that you can't fo wrong with either program.

As a resident at Temple, I feel pretty comfortable saying that the program compares very favorably to others in the area (and beyond). We're strong in all areas, especially MSK and TBI, have excellent exposure to procedures, and a very supportive alumni network. PM me with any specific ?'s.

Nice! Are they only considering those whom they interviewed during the match season or are they accepting applications outside the match?
Where did you hear about these spots?

thanks

For 2008, they were accepting positions outside the match - advertised right here on SDN. But for 2009 and later the positions are through the match.
