According to Temple, they require two letters of recommendation from "health care professionals."

Honestly I've committed to shadowing one DPM for about 30 hours and am pretty sure he will write me one, but how bad would it be if the second letter was not from another DPM?

I have shadowed an MD (my pediatrician) and I have also volunteered at a outpatient physical therapy/rehabilitation place. I think I developed a better relationship with the PTA there and she said if I ever needed a letter for something to not hesitate (i think she thinks I want to do PT but it was more of an extension of general hospital volunteering for me).

What do you guys think I should do for the second letter, the PTA or the MD? Does prestige matter in this circumstance (no offense to anyone)? - And also if I ask for the MD letter I might get questioned why I didn't want to go MD....

Any advice is highly appreciated...Temple is by far my first choice!!

I've interviewed and been accepted already so i'll share my experience. My other letter came from a pharmacist. I was asked why I didn't choose pharmacy but I think that's only because I worked there for 6+ years. You should just ask whoever you feel will write you a better one.

Good luck.

This is going to sound sketchy, but I forgot I didn't tell my pod to send the letter Temple (I applied to them after my initial round because my school paid for another app fee), and no one mentioned anything to me about not having ANY health-related letters. I haven't been formally accepted yet, so maybe they'll ask for it, but I could probably call and get an admission decision if I wanted. Anyways, my point is, they aren't picky, and plenty of people have gotten in without 2 letters, and I might get in without any... I kinda feel like a tool asking my pod to send another letter if I've already been accepted. If they need it, I'll send, but otherwise not worth it.

I met a Student Services Specialist for Temple this weekend at the AMSA conference at UCD and she said that they only need one letter from a DPM. The other can come from any other health professional. I would go with the PTA if I were you. Sounds like you would be able to get a stronger letter from her 🙂

I sent a letter from a DPM and another letter from a MD to both Temple and NYCPM. I was not asked a single question regarding why I got a letter from MD. I don't think they really care as long as you show deep interest in podiatry. Though not true for all MDs, but my past experiences have taught me that they take a long time to write a letter. It took her 3 months to write one.

I got accepted without the letter... Lol. Don't take this as the rule, but obviously it is possible

Thanks for all of the advice/replies guys, I know it's relatively early for me but when do you suppose is a good time to start asking for letters of recommendations for schools? Again, I am only a junior in college and wish to apply to schools probably mid-august of this upcoming summer. I am thinking when I go back home for a month for winter break that I will go back to both the DPM and PTA to volunteer and am thinking of asking them for letters then, or is this too soon? I honestly don't know much of the application process and I don't know the form/method that these letters are sent out - electronic? Do a need an account to something?

Sorry for all of these "noob" questions but I am a big believer in the idea that it is never to early to start considering these things so I am not begging for letters at the last minute....when is an appropriate time to start getting letters from people (DPM, pre-health committee, etc.) in light of a summer application process?

Thanks again!

I go I a small school so I talk to my letter writers regularly. If this is true with you, I would "inception" them in late spring and say something like, "hey, I'm going to need a LOR for pod school later this summer, is that something you'd be willing to do?" Once they say yes, go on with your life until mid to late July. Remind them that you need a letter by the end of August (AACPMAS doesn't send out apps until the first week in September). Because they already agreed to it, there won't be any problem. And because when you asked it wasn't urgent and you didn't need it for a few months, they are more likely to say yes.
