Hey everyone,
I was recently accepted to Temple and loved it, then I interviewed at Penn State on Monday (it went well) and was also very impressed. I do not consider myself a city person at all and loved the space the Hershey provides, but I LOVED Temple's new medical building. Anyone have any helpful opinion on this decision? (hopefully non-biased)

thanks a lot in advance.👍

I would imagine Temple has stronger and broader opportunities for research. There would also be more opportunities to work with the underserved. They also have great international options. So... if any of these are important to you then I would pick Temple over Penn State. However, if you are not interested in these things I think you'd need to look at which curriculum and which environment best suit you. They are both great schools.

(disclaimer: I am applying to both, but Temple has a much more informative website so I'm more familiar with what they have to offer. Learning about Hershey requires much more digging.)

I got into Temple (loved it there) and was deciding whether or not to go to Penn State for an interview. Because Penn State isn't ranked in US News, I asked a doctor at work what the reputation of each is. His reply:

"Personally, I think Temple has a slightly better reputation in the medical world (not the football world), but either is fine. Penn State is definitely less urban. I think the difference between the two in terms of education would not be great."

So basically wherever you go will be fine, it's just up to your personal preference of where you think you would thrive. 👍

Nothing else really needs to be said.

thanks for the input, keep the ideas coming guys. Anyone else speaking from experience out there to push for one or the other?

I interviewed both places, and I agree the difference in reputation and education you'll get would not be great. As for underserved, there are a lot of poor people in rural PA as well, so I think if that were your thing you could find it. I may depend on your ultimate goal, although you may not know yet (as far as staying on for residency, etc.) You may want to explore the curriclum style at both places. When I was interviewing, Penn State had this small group system, and it seemed stressful when I met with current students. Temple at the time had traditional lectures.

I've lived in Philly and in rural/small town PA and I would choose Penn State over Temple in a heartbeat.

Good luck!

If you have a family, or if you'd rather get a 3bd-2bath house instead of a 400 sq ft dilapidated apartment for your $800/mo, go with Penn State at Hershey.

Temple is better if trauma surg or ER interests you. Penn State has stronger neuro/neurosurg, if you care.

If you're interested in neuro, Penn state is getting a fantastic person and neurologist this year (Eugene Marsh)

I'm pretty interested in sports medicine/ortho right now. But who knows what I will be looking at in a few years.

Hey now... the neighborhood around Temple is very inexpensive. I'm sure you could get a 3 bedroom townhouse there too. 😉

/in all seriousness, most Temple students I've met live in Wash West or Manayunk, though I do know at least one who lives right next to the med campus on the cheap. Reputations are probably equal, so I'd probably choose Temple just because Harrisburg is a dump.

My husband and I are hoping to buy a house in the next several months, and if I decide on Temple (which is very likely), we are mostly planning on looking in NE Philly so I can just hop on the Boulevard and shoot right down to Temple that way.
