By looking at the web site, their school looks pretty nice. Can anybody please verify this...How "sketchy" is Temple really compared to other schools?

obviously the person who wrote that came from some magical utopia full of innocent aryan folks who yodle by day and smoke cigars under the moonlight by night while the women and children dance around the bonfire.

LOL Jeez! It cant be that bad... This guy makes it sound like you are going to school in the middle of Bahgdad or Kabul! Seriously... I doubt that there will be a dental school is such a bad neighborhood that someone is scared for their "Families safety"... This seems rediculous

BULL****TT!!! <-- didn't know that they automatically edited that.. hmmm INTERESTING!! The area isn't NEARLY as bad as that person describes it to be. It's a poor urban area, predominately black with some latinos. The area is CLEAN compared to most other indigent areas, especially the area in the immediated vicinity of the school. I wouldn't be walking near the housing projects at 1200am, but where the hell can you walk around a large metropolitan city at that time of night. The area surrounding the school has beautiful and elaborate murals painted on the sides of statuesque buildings, and the ppl who live in the area seem to have the utmost respect for them, because there was NO GRAFFITTI on those walls. If you're coming from a small town in the midwest to philly... then all i can say to you is: CULTURE SHOCK! 😛

agree with the above said. It's a bad area I have lived in the philly area the last 5 years.... you just need to be 'street smart' dont leave cash lying out on your dashboard, dont wear flashy expensive jewelry anywhere around the campus and don't go strolling around at 4 am in the morning by yourself. It's a city for christ sake... it can happen in any city. If you respect the area you will be fine, just keep to yourself and don't ask anyone for directions outside of 2 blocks of the health center.

Great, thanks for the input.... I take it that this person had a fairly bad experience with the interview, that or he comes from a very rich area and hasn't been exposed to the real world...

'shrugs'... maybe....I think they hold the graduation ceremony for Temple Dental at the Kimmel Center (I may be wrong.. I can't remember) but it's one of the nicest places in town! No reason not to invite the family to the greatest day of your (and Their) life.

I took the subway to the dental school the day before my interview there and I had no problems, but at the time I was dressed down. I noticed a petite white girl by herself in the subway and she did not look worried, even thought the city is urban and primarily poor african american. The day of the interview I took a cab to the school but decided I needed a bacon egg and cheese mcgriddle. This time I was well dressed in a suit with a nice overcoat and boy the homeless people surrounded me thinking I was a business man with some money. To tell you the truth I felt alittle uncomfortable. Then again there are not going to be many times where i walk into mcdonalds with a suit on. End point is if you are not used to urban life you will be in for culture shock and if you are street smart you will stay out of trouble pretty easy. But I would like to make another point that this is dental school and I would have attended a school allmost anywhere to obtain my dream of becoming a dentist. Temple vs not being a dentist is an easy choice for me 😀

N. Philly is a rough area, no question... arguably one of the worst in the country.

However, Temple's dental and med school are grouped together about a mile north of main campus, and the school does as good a job providing a safe and suitable environment for the students.

Compare to UPenn, it's arguably much safer, as people around there have (and still do) get capped right off the campus...

Anyway, the subway literally drops you off right in front of Temple Dental. If you need to walk few blocks to grab something to eat, you're fine during the day... and if unless you're looking for some rock or possibly a low-end "lady of the evening", you won't be hanging round there at night anyway.

I'm from Idaho, not too many urban areas around here, but I was pleasantly surprised when I went for my interview. I had heard all these horror stories about the location and I came away thinking that those people must be clueless or overly-sheltered. I'd go in a heartbeat. Besides, you're gonna be a very good dentist when you graduate and thats worth some discomfort anyway. jmo

I would say that a lot of people are so disenchanted by Temple's interview process that they blast it for any and all reasons. As someone that's lived in Philly, I'll say that it is a tough city. You have to be smart, way smarter than you have to be in Boston. I'd also say that it is a racist city: the whites hate the blacks and vice versa. Seriously, I'd never heard a white person use the N-word until I went to college at Saint Joeseph's University. Scary stuff. And just to reinforce the fact that almost everyone from philly is racist and compounds the problems, you get to meet that guy Brian at Temple. Even though he seems like a nice guy, his best way to explain why Temple is dangerous is to tell us "Yeah, it's a dark area, you've got to keep your head up." Hello...dark area. What a *****. Don't choose not to go there because it's scary, choose not to go there because it's the most backwards city you'll find north of the Mason-Dixon line.
