Temple

Yeah, apparently all we do is record ourselves for 3-5 minutes. When I asked to verify that, the lady on the phone said there is no one-on-one interview.

thats really weird! but maybe its better than having a tough interviewer..

I like the video idea a lot actually. I'm not a fan of how some of the interviews have a speed dating type format where they just drill you with questions under pressure. I feel much better just communicating with people and letting them know about who I am as a person. I don't feel like the interviews should be an exam...we have had enough of those. If you have gotten that far, you are qualified for the job.

When did you guys get news of an interview? Was it via email or phone call?

revive. so what do we *talk* about for 3-5 minutes? State your name and smile? Give a three minute video pitch for why you think you're excellent? Is there any format to it?😕

So you travel all the way to Pennsylvania just so you can sit in front of a camera for 3-5 minutes? That doesn't sound fair.

well, they also give you an amazing tour of the facilities. They are going all out with digital x-rays and pretty much brand new clinic....

you also get to spend time talking with D2/D3/and D4 students, and pretty much every student we spoke with LOVED temple

The format for the 5 minute video is in the interview invite email.
You can say whatever you want but it is suggested you explain what makes you stand out as a candidate and why you want to be a dentist.

I understand that you get a good overview of the school; however, every school shows you its facilities. Also, newer technology does not necessarily translate to better education though it helps a lot.

Also, why would dental students participating in the interview process at their homeschool say anything bad about their school? I think we almost always get a biased picture when we talk with dental students at interviews.

I'm not trying to bash Temple. Heck, I applied there too because I thought it was a great school from their website and hearsay. I just feel that 3-5 minutes of video for the AdCom is not enough in determining if a person is good fit for that school when other schools provide 30 minutes of face time to get to know you.

However, I can't blame them for taking this route since over 3000 people apply there yearly. So, I guess they are doing their best within the means.

All in all, I still hold Temple in high regard. I was just disappointed to hear about this short video interview format...

Thanks for your great insight, dentalWorks. You always provide good, solid advice!

That is true. But what about 80,000 patient visits per year 😀? Thats one of the highest numbers of patient visits in all dental schools nation wide. I also loved the fact that they took us into their oral surgery department WHILE they were doing surgeries, it was awesome. Other interviews I been to didn't do that, they didn't take us into the OMFS cause they said "its too intense over there"

alright, fair enough. I never see anyone bash their school.

I see what your saying, but think about this. When you have a 30 minute face-to-face interview, if the person interviewing you, for some odd reason didn't like you personally (for whatever reason).... chances are, he isn't going to give you a good representation to the adcom committee. So a SINGLE person has the power to influence your career.

versus when you have a 3-5 minute video of your self, where the entire adcom committee (11 or 12 of them) see the video and each of them get to judge your character.... If 3 of them didn't like you but the other 9 did, chances are, you will still get accepted (majority vote).

I guess it can go both ways, I also like the traditional feel of a 1-vs-1 interview, I usually do very well in those. But the 3-5 minute video is.... a little creative lol, I like it too.

Yeh, temple is pretty crazy with the number of people they get. I think last year, they got 4500 applications, and my ADEA book says they only interviewed about 300 or so. They will also give the D1 entering class a $10,000-25,000 scholarship money for the top 25 students entering the class (this is based on undergrad GPA, DAT scores, and how they did in the interview).

Hey Everyone,

I interviewed at Temple Dental School two days ago. For the interview, they put each of us in a room with a video camera and we had up to 4 minutes to speak. The prompt was something like: Explain your interest in dentistry and why we should accept you to Temple. I knew about the video interview in advance so I prepared a 4 minute speech and rehearsed it many times. Brian seemed impressed by my preparation and said I was the first person all year to come in with a well-rehearsed 4 minute speech. When I got home, I videotaped myself giving the speech and put it onto YouTube. Feel free to use it as a reference for preparing your own speeches.
