i'm an intern with a temporary physician license in illinois. i got my DEA number and everything but i was curious if this temporary license has any limitations compared to having a regular license after passing step3.

one particular question was whether or not i can write scripts in other states.

thanks

I think most temporary licenses are only for use with patients at your institution, and use for anyone other than patients you see during your training is strictly prohibited. Thats the way it is in my state.

You can only practice medicine in those states in which you are licensed. The writing of a script constitutes the practice of medicine. Pretty straightforward.

Some states also require a pharmacy license in addition to a medical license.
If your temporary license is a restricted license you can only use it within the bounds of its restrictions as well.

This is going to sound harsh, though I don't mean it as such.

Your question reveals a level of ignorance about the licensing process that is frankly dangerous for you. You need to do some real research on this issue (beyond reading SDN), so you know what's legal and what isn't.

Ignorance in this particular area can get you into big trouble, the kind of trouble that haunts you for the rest of your medical career.

That's exactly correct, only for training. OP, if you decide to moonlight during training you will need to obtain an unrestricted license. 3dtp is correct as well.

I am in a state that do not do temporary licenses on a formal basis for trainees (ie residents). I just use the institution's DEA# for scripts. I live within walking distance of the state line and the scripts I write here are valid on the other side of the state line though the other state has more stringent script printing guidelines for controlled substances.

Yes i am ignorant about the specific details about temporary physician licensure limitations. And i think most PGYs are as well. Get off your high horse and rhetoric about how i'm a danger to myself (and implied, to society as well).
