From another thread, lizinwonderland responded that interview invites should go out by the last week of this month and that the the selection committee doesn't even begin to review applications until a few days prior to sending out invites.

My sister is a second yr student there and said that their interviews will be the second week in March Mon-Thurs

Does anyone know how the zoo medicine programs compare between UTK and UF??

Just an FYI I just called admissions and asked about the status of the applications, she asked for my name (not really sure unless it was just to figure out if I'm IS or OOS) and she said that the committee should be meeting and sending letters out on Monday. (I'm OOS btw) Just thought everyone would like to know! Good luck!!!

Not assuming I'll get an interview, but they wouldn't be leaving us with much time to get travel arrangements if their interviews are the 2nd week in March (and right before Spring Break too!).

I hate the waiting game.

Does anyone know how the zoo medicine programs compare between UTK and UF??

One of the zoo professors here went to UF for his residency. It seems as if they are pretty comparable. The difference is probably going to be what kind of zoo/exotics/wildlife you'll see. He indicated that there were a lot of people in FL that have large cats as pets. Here, we have a relationship with the Tiger Haven. In FL, you'll probably see more gators and reptile species not associated with the zoo. We also see some here, but most tend to be from the zoo that we also have a relationship. We also have relationships with the American Eagle Foundation and the Appalachian Bear rescue organization.

I don't know anything about UF's facilities, but I do know that our exotics ward has been revamped recently. We have different wards for different types of species (wildlife, reptile, small mammal, bird) and two separate surgical suites (although technically, one is labeled for endoscopy). There is also the large cat loading area that is used as a surgical suite/exam room.

At UTK, you'll have several brief introductions 1st and 2nd year into exotic/wildlife/zoo med (a lecture here or there in classes). There are electives 2nd and 3rd year. In the 3rd year, there is a class called multispecies medicine that basically goes over how to treat and what diseases are common to some of the more common species.

Every other year, the UTK AWE (avian, wildlife, and exotics) club puts on an exotics symposium. Missouri does it on our off years. This year, we brought speakers in from all over the U.S. as well as a conservation medicine vet from South Africa. It really depends on what people are interested in.

If you have any other questions about their exotics program, feel free to ask me.

I got my invite today, March 9 at 10am, but I'll be there for the talk by Dean Brace and the tour!! Hope to see some SDNers there!!!:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Sorry, so excited I forgot! Snail mail, but I live about 30 miles from the school, so people farther away should be getting theirs on Monday!

lol, mine is probably sitting out in my mailbox right now. I live twently minutes across town but forgot to check when I got back from a trip earlier today....

and YAY!!! I get to send the hubby out to the mailbox in the dead of night. They really are useful to have around.....

And my interview is on Tuesday, March 9th at 10 am as well. 😀 So I'll be seeing you there Highlsnds. :highfive::woot::claps::biglove:

Anyone get some good news today?? I am in central florida and my mail doesn't come till about 4pm (which has made any decision sent via snail mail excruciatingly painful!!) Just wondering if anyone else has heard anything other than the fabulous Tennessee folks who already received their invites!😛

IS here, live about 2 hours outside of Knoxville. Got my interview invite today! March 11 at 1:00. Woo hoo! Good luck to those of you still waiting!

OOS here (NY), invite for 3/11!

Are you going for the talk w/Dean Brace? I figure even though I've been through parts of the clinic a few times, and spent PLENTY of hours in the large animal section, there will be so much more for me to see and learn! I'm excited about the plans for improvement of the large animal area😀 Don't know what I'm wearing yet though, still have to go shopping. I'll see you there!!!:soexcited:

I would definitely recommend going to the talk with Dr. Brace. He gives you all sorts of information about the people you are interviewing with (like average GPA, stuff like that) as well as what to expect for the day. Then they split off for the tours. You don't have to go on the tour if you don't want to, but then you'll miss the brand new equine hospital (just opened for use this week).

Ughh nothing in central Florida either...boo...tomorrow is probably D-Day then...

😀

Yeah, I'll be there, I'm taking the morning off of work. I've been to the open house and stuff but I've never made it to the chat and tour on interview day. Good luck shopping.

Tennessee's rejection was the worst lol Thankfully I got interviews at four other schools, but really, they didn't have to be so harsh!

New equine hospital??? WOW!!! Still nothing in the mail for me yet....the waiting continues....

Well, we had to. It was part of our agreement with the AVMA as we are on limited accreditation. They're going to be working on the farm animal side next. There's also a new small animal ICU.

Yep, open house is where I got to see more of the facility than the barn. I wish I could go more, but I only work Saturdays and Sundays. For the last 6 years though, I've been sending my cow there for open house so I get to look at all the farm critters in the barn when I drop her off or pick her up😀

I'm actually NOT looking forward shopping, I hate the thought of spending $$ on something I may never wear again, I'm really more of a jeans and T-shirt gal!

I got my interview invite all the way in Los Angeles!! Kinda strange that some of you guys who are closer to UTK haven't....hopefully tomorrow! And hopefully I'll get to meet some of you guys there! 🙂

im from NC and I havent gotten anything.... I think I am about 2 and a half hours away from the school. weird 😕

What did they say?

The letter said, "It is with regret that I inform you that you will not be admitted to the College of Veterinary Medicine this year. Positions in the class will be filled by applicants whose academic records surpass yours enough to make their selection possible through a favorable interview..."

Got my interview invite tonight! It went to my permanent address in Oklahoma and my parents just checked the mail!

March 10th @11:30am

I agree mizmarley! My hopes weren't too high but sheeesh! I mean, I KNOW what rejection means...they don't have to spell it out for me! Oh well, over it. Congrats to those moving on!!

I compromised. I already was working on a "professional dress" wardrobe, which we'll need for fourth year clinical rotations anyway (and most of the dr's wear similar stuff at the office I work at so I can wear it when I have a job too 😀). And then I just found a suit jacket that matched one of the pairs of my dress slacks, and I'll probably atleast wear that during job interviews too so it didn't feel like a total waste.

Hi all! This is my first time posting on the forum. I received an interview invite and after reading the interview feedback I am curious about appropriate interview attire. The interviews sound more informal, would a suit be too dressy? What are your thoughts?

A suit is definitely not too dressy. Most people wear suits to the interviews.

I'll see some of you on March 11 🙂 By the way, mine came to my permanent address.

Rejection here. Damn, that's depressing....alright UF, you are my only chance!!

I'm going for the suit, but dress ranges from slacks and a sweater to pant suits.

Got mine today. It went to my permanent address. I'm surprised it took that long to go somewhere in Tennessee!

Uuuugh still no letter today. This is like torture!! I called and they said they've been sending the letters out in waves but that the last ones should be out by tomorrow. Sigh.🙁🙁

Congrats luplodw! I wish you the best of luck and I hope you have an awesome interview! Keep us posted.🙂

So Deborah from admissions just called to let me know that they sent me an interview invite in the mail by mistake, and that they are sorry but that I should disregard that letter and consider myself rejected. Wow. That is an extra special kind of rejection.🙁🙁 Can't wait to see my fake interview invite!

That has got to be the lamest thing ever!! They should let you interview because of their mistake. I'm sorry! They'll wish they would have interviewed you. Their loss

Sounds like they are not especially well-versed in letting people down easily...

That is pretty bizarre! It is so counter to the way the administrative staff deal with the students--they are super nice, Deborah, especially. But I've heard the rejection letters are always pretty harsh. I have a feeling no one currently there has looked at them in several years to notice.

I cannot even imagine Deborah having to make that call. She is a very, VERY nice woman, and it must have been a task she really did not want to perform.

Sorry to hear the rejections are handled so badly. As I said, it does not reflect the character of the administration in their day to day dealings with us AT ALL.
