Purely out of sheer curiosity, and because I'm sure there's a correct term for this and it's going to bug me until I find out what it is...

What's it called when a patient thinks or perceives that they are receiving some sort of coded or hidden messages in their surroundings. Like if they see an innocuous billboard that says 'McDonald's Turn Left Next 5 ***' & they are able to read the billboard as it is, but their brain is telling them the words/pattern of the letters/colours/whatever have a deeper meaning that needs to be deciphered (to prevent catastrophe, save the world, reveal some great mystic truth, etc). I hope I've explained that properly.

Is this an idea of reference, magical thinking, a delusion, thought insertion, intrusive thoughts, grandiose something or other, something else entirely?

Like I said, sheer curiosity, I just like learning stuff when I can.
