I heard that Foot and Ankle orthopods use some different terminology than podiatrists when it comes to foot and ankle pathomechanics and lower extremity anatomy. I also heard that if a podiatrist is to have a oral in person discussion about foot and ankle pathomechanics or foot and ankle surgery with a Foot and Ankle orthopod in the clinic or in the hospital, the podiatrist must use the Foot and Ankle orthopod terminology about foot and ankle pathomechanics and lower extremity anatomy, and not the podiatry pathomechanics and lower extremity anatomy terminology. Are both these scenarios true everywhere or only in certain demographics based on your past professional experiences? Or are these scenarios not true at all????

There are great foot and ankle surgeons from either the pod or the ortho model. Any F&A surgeon worth his salt would probably get off his high horse, read the best articles from either training model, and therefore understand terms from both. ACFAS and AOFAS guys read both JFAS and FAI. They read Clin FA Surg and they read Clin Pod Med. They learn from texts, conferences, etc from the best guys - regardless of which training model. You should too. 👍

Thank you Feli. Very good advice here 👍👍👍. I have been reading from JFAS and JAPMA when I have time. I have not read from FAI yet but I will now. In terms of textbooks, I have the newest Kauffman and Mann textbook edition which I plan to start reading this summer. I plan to buy the newest edition of McGlamery when it is published in January 2012 (I hope!). And I have been reading Dr Christman's Foot and Ankle Radiology textbook for radiological studies of the lower extremity (which helped in my 2nd year alot this past year!). I have read the PI Manual this past year which helped alot in my classes big time when handouts were not too clear! I am trying to get the most recent edition of Hershey Manual (2007 or 2008?) to read in 4th year. Believe it or not, I find POCKET PODIATRICS an interesting little blue book that I recently got through the class reps. It looks comprehensive and helpful for clinic cases for my 3rd year next month! Some people from c/o 2011 told me it is ok to use to study for Part 2 (alot of answers to actual test questions from Part 2 boards can actually be found in POCKET PODIATRICS, just reworded every year!). A good number of residents are even still using it in their long white coats. Leon Watkins DPM, the leading creator of POCKET PODIATRICS, is an attending himself who trains podiatry residents and has a nice foot and ankle clinic facility through his website.
