doc george, what is a "dinkydoc"?

I got dermatology as #1 on my list...if only it were that easy. I have a question though - Internal medicine came close to the top of my list, and family medicine ended up close to the bottom. I always thought that those 2 were pretty similar in most aspects, except perhaps prestige. What distinction is this test making between the 2?

 This thing is accurate!!!! I couldn't sum up my interests better....CT surgery has always been my primary interest followed by the other surgical specialties. Primary care has always been one of my lesser interests...and those rank at the bottom....This thing knows what its doing.

I tend to...
dislike being asked the same questions over and over again  ah wells here's my results:

I'm surprised b/c I only saw myself in pediatrics versus the rest of the top 10 results. although aerospace med sounds pretty cool :D (i have no idea what they do hehe :))

Not too far off. I've already decided no on #1, and probably not #2, but I'm interested in some of my top 10. What I want to know is, how come colon & rectal surgery made it to #11, all the other surgical specialties are below twenty. Any ideas?

Is it really that surprising that things you thought you wanted to do end up at the top? People model themselves after what they think are the attributes of physicians in whatever field they want to do. For example, if you think you want to be a radiologist, you'll enter answers like "i don't care about patient contact" and "i like technology". For CT surgery, you'll enter things like "I like a definitive cure" and "I like to be in control" or whatever. This quiz just tells you what you want to hear.

Of course, that didn't stop me from taking it at least six times during third year and confirming the fact six times that, yes, i'd like to be a pathologist.

actually many of my top 10 were not areas i wanted. i do not want to do ob/gyn, GI, colo rectal, or urology.

 Now the BIG Q: how reliable is this? I'm not sure if 1,2,3,4 is IT. ;)

I took it and it said I should be a urologist and my friend took it too and that was the only thing that popped up on hers. Mabye this website is trying to recruit them or maybe something else we don't want to know. ... :)

I also did this about a year ago and got similar results:

Rank Specialty Score
1 occupational med 39
2 aerospace med 37
3 preventive med 37
4 urology 35
5 radiology 35
6 pathology 35
7 pediatrics 34
8 thoracic surgery 34
9 general surgery 33
10 physical med & rehabilitation 33
11 psychiatry 32
12 plastic surgery 30

There is absolutely nothing on this list that I am considering.

It's a plot by the American Urological Assocation to swell it's ranks and take over the world!!!:D :D :D

Well, at least it prompted me to find out more about specialties I knew little about (nuclear medicine as #1).

I am just curious what the numbers to the right of each specialty mean. I see some people's results having numbers in the 40s right down to the last pick, and other people going down to the 20s.. ??

Here's what I got.....the ones I'm most interested in are in bold...

1 psychiatry 47
2 rheumatology 46
3 nephrology 46
4 family practice 45
5 preventive med 45
6 aerospace med 45
pediatrics 45
8 physical med & rehabilitation 44
9 med oncology 44
10 hematology 43
11 general internal med 43
12 gastroenterology 42
13 infectious disease 42
14 occupational med 42
15 neurology 42
16 obstetrics/gynecology 41

I took this last year too - these results are more fitting for me. (I don't remember what my top ten were, but there weren't ANYTHING I would ever consider!)

weird, it only gave me my top 7..

1)radiology
2)occupational medicine
3) something I can't remember
4)urology
5) cardiothoracic surgery (even though I have no small motor coordination or dexterity and barely passed anatomy!)
6) general surgery (see above)
7)psychiatry (that one fits really well with the others huh?)

currently want to go into IM or peds, psych might be interesting too however

Is it broken? I've only got 10 specialties on my list and the high score was 35. How come other people care getting scores in the 40s with lists 20 specialties long?

I have absolutely zero interest in all 10 that were listed for me.

1 urology 35
2 radiology 34
3 psychiatry 31
4 occupational med 31
5 plastic surgery 31
6 general surgery 31
7 preventive med 30
8 physical med & rehabilitation 28
9 thoracic surgery 27
10 aerospace med 26

Maybe it didn't like that I answered a lot of questions neutrally.

Okay, I think it is broken because I just refreshed the page and a new list popped up.

1 ophthalmology 38
2 neurology 37
3 pathology 37
4 allergy & immunology 37
5 gastroenterology 35
6 endocrinology 35
7 general internal med 35

34 hematology 27
35 aerospace med 26
36 orthopaedic surgery 26

Ok I admit it -- I'm procrastinating studying for my a&p test tomorrow by taking this quiz but I was also curious how it would rank me. I'm 28, but an ugrad with another 3+ years left before I even start med school.

Here goes:
1. Plastic Surgery 44 not
2. OBGYN 42
3. nuclear med 42 (what the heck is this specialty anyway?)
4. orthopaedic surgery 41 Yes
5. opthalmology 41 nope
6. peds 41 maybe
7. General surgery 41 maybe
8. radiology 41 not
9. psychiatry 41 slightly possible
10. pulmonary 41
11. medical oncology 41
12. nephrology 40 (what's this one?)
13. neurosurgery 40
14. rheumotology 40
15. physical med & rehab 40
16. otolaryngology 40
17. preventive med 39
18. thoracic surgery 38
19. aerospace med 38
20. pathology 37
21. urology 37
22. occupational med 36
23. neurology 36

source: iserson's getting into a residency.

3. nuclear med 42 (what the heck is this specialty anyway?)

a doc who uses radioactive materials to diagnose and treat diseases by imaging the body's physiologic function. they put radioactive materials into the bloodstream for diagnostic studies and treatments. they will also perform radioimmunoassay tests.

12. nephrology 40 (what's this one?)

they diagnoses and treat diseases of the kidney and the urinary system.

On the home page for the test, it says: This material was originally published in the book "How to Choose a Medical Specialty", by Anita Taylor.

I actually read this book. (Pre med... entertaining myself in a medical school library for several summers. What else was I to do? It was either that or path textbooks. ;) )

At the end of each chapter (about each specialty), there was a short quiz. This test is just all those quizes rolled into one. That's why some questions were asked multiple times. If you pay attention, you can even guess what questions relate to what specialty... I noticed that they didn't attempt to mix the questions up.

My scores, top 10:
1 radiology (39)
2 nuclear med (39)
3 dermatology (36)
4 anesthesiology (34)
5 allergy & immunology (33)
6 neurology (33)
7 occupational med (33)
8 psychiatry (32)
9 pathology (32)
10 colon & rectal surgery (31)

LOL. I guess I shouldn't have answered 5 for those "do you like free time", "do you like a planned schedule", and "do you want to be well paid" questions. :D

Thanks for the definitions OldMan....definitely didn't have time tonite to go searching lol. Wish me luck on my test tomorrow/today. Our professor crammed the entire respiratory system in with blood, heart, and arteries and loves to trick us!

i got 36 matches and the lowest reported score was a 37 (id). i guess this means i'm either a pushover or actually cut out for many things. oddly, my top score of 47 was for the specialty (neurosurg) that both excites me and scares me the most. i actually like it a lot but thought i made it clear in the survey that i wasn't willing to put up with those hours. maybe this thing really can look into your soul! neurology and immunology were right up there too (46) and are both of significant interest. i got a 46 for urology, 45 for nephrology and colon/rectal surg, and a 44 for gastro. what the dilley? no way am i doing poddy practice. anyway, of my top 20, i'd do 10 of'em. go figure. reminder to everyone reading this: remember this test only compares your personality to people practicing these specialties....it's not actually trying to determine your desires.

On the whole, it was fairly accurate. I volunteered 200 hours in the UNC ER and I always liked it!
