With all of the shortages, I know several people turning to ebay to buy their own - obviously most of the ones out there are Chinese made kn95 (their version of n95) - is there any self test that anyone knows to see if these masks actually work? I ordered some for my team - as our option is this or a surgical mask - but want to test to see if the KN95's are better or not

Best I can think of is doing the procedure for fit testing to see if you can smell the chemicals (see around 3:20):

Maybe your employee health has the equipment for that if you're in a hospital setting.

dumb question - I know for PAPR's they did nutrasweet - any idea what chemical is of the right particle size? fumes from mineral spirits or something are probably too small to accurately test.

Watched it - we don't do fit testing anymore because they tell us it is not needed - so don't know if they have the chemicals

Sorry, not much experience with this. I would hope if it is at least airtight the kn95 is at least better than a surgical mask and will not let droplets through. I have been fit tested before a couple times in the past few years and in each setting they did the big helmet thing with a foul-smelling chemical.

I get what you are saying, and normally would agree - but what if the material used is not as effective as a legit approved surgical mask? after watching a you tube video comparing a counterfit one compared to a legit one, it made me realize if the material is BS, it doesn't matter if it is air tight

Yes, you have access to a hospital lab, there's a nondestructive aerosol NaCl test they can run to see if they work. Most of the methods that I can think of with home ingredients are destructive tests.

I would not trust those Kn95 masks on ebay

First red flag: it's eBay
Second red flag: it's from China

I know everything is from China but how can one not be suspicious about anything that comes from there? Not being racist but they have no quality control and cover-up everything and have no regard for human life or the environment. Not the people but their manufacturing companies.

Your iPhone is from China.

You think manufacturing PPE is more complicated than manufacturing iPhones?

What are you talking about? You're creating an argument out of nothing. I think you just enjoy arguing with people on here. We're discussing the safety of N95 masks from eBay to use at work to protect against coronavirus. What does a phone have to do with masks to protect against coronavirus?

I have no problems with phones made in China. I used to have a Huawei and it was great. But I wouldn't trust their PPE off of eBay. Fair enough?

How is buying on ebay different than buying from amazon?

would you say a face shield plus a regular mask can protect you better than just an N95 mask? I mean unless you are in the room with a covid positive person for an extended period of time. I still think droplet protection should be the main defense no?

I'll take the rhetorical. The good majority of the enterprise CPU's come from either TSMC or the Intel fabs at Portland or Phoenix. The defect rate is the same, yes, but the quality control is far different. Even if 3M manufacturers stuff in the same factory that TeamHealth does (which they do in Shanghai), the people during the day shift for 3M do a non-****ty job of quality control throwing away the ones that suck. The night group which does not have the same standards will gleefully sell things that wouldn't pass the day shift quality control check.

So 90% of the time, it'll be just fine. 10% of the time, what would have been thrown out by the manufacturer in the day time are sold under the third shift brand, and the third shift brand does not have the same standards for quality control for the stuff they have at night. So electronics, I buy from wherever I know the fab source irrespective of brand. My favorite keyboard for work happens to be a Taiwanese brand that manufactures Das Keyboard in the day and Ducky at night (it is now to the point though that Ducky is a brand of its own). Ducky keyboards are really good and are quite artistic, so I have those in the prestige office, while I keep a Das in any work area that needs standardization. But masks, I wouldn't care either even if defective because it's just the odds anyway. Meds and anything I ingest like food, I hate the idea of eating anything from China, so I won't eat catfish (swai) or other things shipped to China for butchering and then shipped back here as 10% is a bit much for my taste.

It's up to you what to source, but if you happen to know the OEM of the part (like the mask) being the same factory as what the brand material comes from, then you make a decision. There are certain OEMS though that are trusted, I definitely trust Hon Hai (Foxconn) as they manufacture for HPE and Apple. I trust Norinco because their guns are good enough for the Chinese military. You just trade price for higher risk, but if you do the research, it is a good value proposition in many cases.

Still trust KN95 masks on eBay?

@BMBiology no response? You usually reply to me instantly with an argument, how uncharacteristic of you. I'm very curious what you think of the KN95 masks from eBay now that several states have recalled millions of them from China?

Sorry I got things to do.

My response - so?

You can't trust anything coming from China. Definitely, not for your health. They are the most greedy dinguses on the planet. If there is a profit, they will make fakes. Anything for $$$.

I consider their KN95s equivalent to paper/cloth masks you can make at home. Better than nothing?

He would rather have people use a bandana to cover their face! It is time to use your head.

Now you have sour grapes.

I know it's hard to admit for you, but it's okay to be wrong about something. It's common knowledge that China takes shortcuts and makes fake items, I saw this coming a mile away.
